Chapter 2 - The Command at the GatesBy 9:30 PM, my midnight-black armored Maybach glided through the iron security gates of the Whitaker Estate perched high above the Hudson River.

The grand stone mansion was lit up like a palace, its golden lights casting long reflections across the manicured lawns and marble terraces.

Sitting in the rear cabin beside me was Hannah, wearing a clean sweater, her hazel eyes wide with disbelief as she held four-year-old Lily, who was now wrapped in warm fleece blankets, her fever already breaking thanks to the emergency pediatric medication my private physician had administered during the drive.

My chief of security, Marco—a broad-shouldered man who had served beside me for fifteen years—stood waiting at the front steps holding a massive leather umbrella against the rain.

When the car door opened, I carried Lily up the marble stairs myself, with Hannah walking right beside my right shoulder.

"Marco," I spoke flatly as we stepped into the soaring, heated marble foyer.

"Yes, Don Grant?" Marco bowed his head respectfully.

"Prepare the east wing master guest suite for Hannah and her daughter," I ordered, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Assign two private nurses from Mount Sinai to monitor the child's recovery around the clock. No one enters that wing without my direct permission."

"Understood, sir," Marco replied without a single question.

Before Marco could usher them up the grand staircase, the sleek elevator doors near the grand library chimed.

Celeste Rowan stepped out onto the marble floor.

She wore an exquisite silk lounge gown, holding a glass of vintage Pinot Noir, her blonde hair styled in soft waves. A serene, triumphant smile rested on her lips—a smile that vanished instantly the moment her eyes landed on Hannah Brooks standing in my foyer, wrapped in my wool coat, holding her daughter.

Celeste’s glass of wine slipped from her fingers.

CRASH!

The crystal shattered against the white marble, deep red wine splashing across her silk slippers like a pool of fresh blood.

"Grant...?" Celeste gasped, her voice cracking in total, speech-bound horror. "What... what is she doing here?! Why is the maid in the main house?!"

I didn't rush toward her.

I handed little Lily gently over to Mrs. Gable, my head housekeeper, and gestured for Hannah to follow her up the stairs.

Once the children and staff disappeared onto the second floor, the vast foyer fell into a suffocating, freezing silence.

I walked slowly across the marble floorboards, stopping three feet from Celeste, my storm-gray eyes locking onto hers with a cold, absolute, terrifying stillness that made her take two fast steps backward.

"You dropped your wine, Celeste," I noted softly.

"Grant... listen to me!" Celeste stammered, sweat instantly beading along her hairline as she looked at my severe, carved features. "She's lying to you! Whatever that pathetic girl told you in Queens—"

"I didn't ask her anything, Celeste," I interrupted, my baritone dropping into a low, razor-sharp whisper that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. "I simply asked her why the heat had been turned off in her apartment for eleven days while you were buying diamond necklaces with my credit card."

Celeste’s jaw sagged open in total, horror-stricken panic.

"You used my name to threaten a mother and a child," I spoke, taking one slow step closer to her. "You stole thirty percent of her wages for two months. And you kept the legal heir to the Rowan Trust starving in a Queens tenement so you wouldn't have to split your father's estate."

Celeste took another step back, her back hitting the cold marble pillar behind her. "Grant... please! I did it for us! I wanted our marriage to be clean! I didn't want some bastard child dragging my family's name through the tabloids!"

I slowly reached into my jacket, pulling out the eight-carat flawless engagement ring she had left on her vanity table that morning.

May you like

I didn't throw it. I dropped it flat into the puddle of spilled wine near her feet. CLINK.

"The engagement is over, Celeste," I declared flatly, every word dropped into the quiet foyer like a slab of cold granite. "And by eight o'clock tomorrow morning... my legal team will be filing a formal criminal indictment against you for Extortion, Wage Theft, and Child Endangerment."
