Chapter 7 - The Light After the FogOne year later.

The courtyard of the Pacific Heights estate was transformed into a stunning garden paradise. White hydrangeas, blooming roses, and strings of warm fairy lights filled the green lawns overlooking the glowing waters of the bay.

Soft classical music drifted through the air as seventy of our closest friends, colleagues, and family members sat in elegant wooden chairs.

I stood inside the private dressing room, looking at myself in the full-length mirror.

I wore a breathtaking, simple white silk gown with a sweetheart neckline and a long, flowing train. My hair was styled in soft waves, adorned with tiny white orchids. My skin was radiant, my eyes sparkling with absolute happiness.

There were no marks of fear on my face. No exhaustion. No ghosts.

A quiet knock sounded at the door, and Maria walked in, carrying a tiny fifteen-month-old Olivia.

Olivia was wearing a delicate little white dress with a pink sash, her golden curls bouncing as she babbled excitedly. She had grown into a vibrant, healthy, endlessly curious toddler who brought pure magic into every room she entered.

"Look at your beautiful mommy, Olivia," Maria beamed, placing the little girl gently into my arms.

"Mama!" Olivia giggled, pressing her soft cheek against mine.

"Hey, my sweet girl," I whispered, holding her tight, tears of pure joy prickling my eyes.

A moment later, the door opened further, and Christopher stepped in.

He took one look at me and Olivia, and his breath caught in his throat. Dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo, he looked impossibly handsome, radiating an aura of pride, devotion, and profound love.

"You take my breath away, Maya," Chris said, stepping forward and placing his arm around my waist, pulling both me and Olivia close to his heart.

Olivia immediately reached out her tiny arms, giggling, "Dada! Dada!"

Christopher’s face melted into the softest, happiest smile I had ever seen. He took Olivia into his arms, kissing her chubby cheek before looking back at me with tears shining in his eyes.

Hearing her call him Dada—a word she had chosen all on her own six months ago—was the greatest victory of his life.

"Are you ready, my love?" Chris asked softly, extending his hand to me.

I looked down at the paper sitting on my vanity desk—a draft of my debut novel, set to be published in the fall, dedicated to The man who answered the door at 2:17 a.m.

I took Christopher’s hand, lacing my fingers firmly through his.

"I've been ready for twenty-four years," I smiled.

Together, the three of us stepped out of the room and walked out into the warm California sunlight, surrounded by love, music, and the endless horizon of our brand-new life.
