Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the FoundationThe house was quiet again.

Inside the nursery, Olivia was sitting on a plush blanket, happily clapping her hands as Maria read her a picture book.
I stood on the balcony off the living room, watching the fog roll gently across the Golden Gate Bridge. The weight that had been crushing my lungs for nine months was entirely gone. I felt light. I felt clean.
A pair of strong arms gently wrapped around my waist from behind. Christopher rested his chin softly on my shoulder, pulling me back against his broad, warm chest.
"Is it over?" I asked quietly, placing my hands over his.
"It's over, Maya," Chris whispered, kissing the side of my neck. "He’s gone. His lawyers confirmed the final filing twenty minutes ago. You and Olivia are completely free."
I let out a long, shuddering breath, leaning my head back against his shoulder. "I don't know how to thank you, Chris. You destroyed a man’s entire company for me."
"I bought a company to protect my family," Chris corrected gently, turning me around in his arms so I was facing him. "There’s a difference."
I looked into his dark, beautiful eyes. "Family?"
Christopher took my hand and led me inside to his desk. Sitting in the center of the mahogany wood was a thick, elegant leather binder marked: The Sterling-Turner Educational Trust & Estate Alignment.
"What is this?" I asked, flipping open the first page.
"It’s an educational foundation," Chris explained, his voice filled with passion. "I know how much you loved teaching in Toronto, Maya. I know how much you missed writing. So... I established a forty-million-dollar endowment for a new literature and creative writing academy here in San Francisco. And I want you to be the Executive Director."
I stared at the pages, tears welling up in my eyes. "Chris... this is..."
"This isn't a gift, Maya," he said softly, taking both of my hands in his. "This is who you are. You were meant to inspire people. You were meant to write. I just built the stage—you’re the one who’s going to shine on it."
He looked down at me, his expression turning deeply earnest.
"I don't want you to stay in this house because you feel obligated, or because I saved you from David," Chris said, his voice trembling slightly with rare vulnerability. "I want you to stay because you want to be here. With me. As my equal, my partner, and the only woman I have ever loved."
I looked at the documents, then up at the man who had loved me through every storm, every mistake, and every silent mile between us.

"I don't want to be anywhere else, Christopher," I whispered. "I’ve been trying to find my way back to you since fourth grade."
He pulled me into his arms, kissing me with a fierce, joyful passion that made the rest of the world vanish entirely.
