Chapter 5 - The MasterstrokeDavid stood on the driveway, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The two private investigators he had hired exchanged nervous glances and slowly took two steps back, realizing they were standing on the losing side of an atomic war.

"You... you can't do that," David stammered, his voice losing every drop of its previous aggression. "That... that's illegal interference!"
"It’s business, David," Chris said coolly. "You like business, don't you? You like using money and power to bully women who have less than you. You thought Maya was alone. You thought she had no one to stand behind her."
Chris walked down the remaining steps until he was standing inches from David. Christopher towered over him, radiating pure, lethal dominance.
"Maya is not alone," Chris said softly, every word laced with poison. "She has me. She has every dollar, every lawyer, and every resource I own. If you so much as type her name into a search engine, if you stand within five hundred miles of her or her daughter, I will not just bankrupt your firm—I will personally ensure you spend the next decade answering to federal tax auditors."
David’s hands began to shake. "Maya... please..." he choked out, turning his desperate eyes to me. "We can work this out! I’ll pay child support! I’ll sign whatever you want!"
I looked at David Lancaster—the man who had made me spend months crying in dark rooms, the man who had made me feel like an unlovable mistake. Seeing him reduced to a trembling mess by the man who had loved me for twenty-four years washed away the last traces of my fear.
"You won't pay child support, David," I said, stepping down the stairs to stand firmly beside Christopher. "Because you are going to sign a full, voluntary relinquishment of all parental rights. You will have no legal connection to Olivia. You will never see her, never speak to her, and never cross our paths again."
"And if you refuse," Chris added, leaning in close to David’s ear, "I execute the foreclosure on your firm by 5:00 p.m. today. You will be penniless, disgraced, and ruined before the market closes."
David looked at Christopher’s cold, unyielding eyes. Then he looked at the security guards holding legal tablets ready with non-disclosure and parental surrender documents drafted by the top family lawyers in California.
Realizing he had lost everything, David took the stylus from the security chief’s hand with trembling fingers.
Right there on the driveway, under the crisp California sun, David signed away every claim he had ever held over my life and my daughter’s future.

"Get off my property," Christopher ordered quietly.
David didn't say another word. He turned, got into his rental car, and sped down the driveway, leaving behind nothing but the quiet rustle of the wind through the eucalyptus trees.
