Chapter 2 - The Fortress in the FogThe morning sun broke through the San Francisco fog, casting golden light across the Pacific Heights estate. When I woke up, the smell of fresh coffee and toasted brioche drifted into the suite.

For a moment, I panicked. I sat up quickly, my heart racing as my mind reflexively prepared for the terror of my Toronto apartment—listening for the sound of David’s car pulling up, or the harsh chime of a threatening text message.
Then I saw Olivia. She was awake in her crib, kicking her feet silently and babbling at a silver mobile shaped like small stars.
Beside her crib sat a brand-new, top-of-the-line baby monitor, a pristine leather diaper bag, and three boutique boxes filled with baby clothes in Olivia's size, complete with hand-written tags from a high-end children's shop downtown.
A quiet knock sounded at the door. Maria peeked in, carrying a tray with fresh orange juice and breakfast.
"Good morning, Maya," Maria smiled warmly. "How did you sleep?"
"Like I haven't slept in six months," I admitted, stepping out of bed and putting on my robe. "Maria... where did all these baby clothes come from?"
Maria laughed softly, setting the tray on the coffee table. "Mr. Christopher sent his assistant to the flagship boutique in Union Square at 6:00 a.m. He had them open the store early. He was paranoid that Olivia wouldn't have enough organic cotton outfits."
My chest tightened with a mixture of immense gratitude and uncomfortable guilt. "He didn't have to do that."
"He wanted to," Maria said gently, her tone turning meaningful. "Maya... I’ve worked for Christopher for seven years. I’ve seen politicians, tech titans, and famous actresses pass through this house. I’ve never seen him look at anyone the way he looked at you when he opened that front door last night. He’s been waiting a very long time for you to come here."
My heart did a strange, electric flip against my ribs.
An hour later, dressed in a soft cream sweater Christopher’s assistant had bought for me, I walked down to his private home office. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the bay.
Christopher was standing behind his desk, dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer and white shirt, talking rapidly into his phone.
"I don't care what his connections in Ontario are," Chris was saying, his voice cold and commanding—the voice of a man who commanded billions in capital. "Run a full forensic audit on David Lancaster’s development firm. I want every tax filing, every shell company, and every NDA he’s ever forced an employee to sign on my desk by noon."
He paused, listening to the person on the other end.
"No," Chris added coldly. "He doesn't get a quiet warning. He threatened Maya. He tried to intimidate a mother and a child. I want him entirely dismantled. Do it now."
I stood in the doorway, frozen.
Christopher hung up the phone, taking a deep breath before turning around. The second his eyes met mine, the lethal chill in his expression evaporated, replaced by that familiar, gentle warmth that belonged only to me.
"Good morning," he said, setting his phone down. "How's Olivia?"
"She's great," I said, stepping into the office. "Chris... were you just talking about David?"
Chris walked around his desk, leaning back against the mahogany wood and crossing his arms. "I called my head of global security, Harrison. We’re putting a legal and financial perimeter around Lancaster."
"Chris, you can't get involved in this," I said nervously, wringing my hands. "David is powerful in Toronto real estate. He has lawyers on retainer who specialize in ruining people. If he finds out I’m here, if he sees you using your resources against him, he’ll try to drag your name through the mud!"
Chris let out a low, amused scoff. "Maya... David Lancaster is a regional developer with a fifty-million-dollar portfolio built on debt and intimidation. I run a ninety-billion-dollar global infrastructure firm. He isn't a threat to me. He's a bully who picked on the wrong woman."

He stepped closer, reaching out to gently tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers lingered near my cheek, sending a jolt of heat through my veins.
"He made you live in fear for nine months, Maya," Chris said, his voice dropping an octave. "It ends today."
