Chapter 6 - The Festival of LightIn late September 2026, nine months after Victoria's birth, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity for the inaugural Victoria Bennett Pediatric & Maritime Gala.
Over five hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, medical directors, and high-society matriarchs gathered beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers.
Standing at the main presentation podium, wearing a breathtaking floor-length dark emerald silk evening gown that celebrated her tall, radiant figure, was Grace Bennett.
Around her neck hung her late mother's vintage pearl necklace, her dark hair falling in glossy waves over her shoulders, her hazel eyes burning with absolute, unshakeable victory, inner peace, and sovereign grace.
Beside the stage stood Marcus Vance, holding nine-month-old Victoria in his broad arms, and Bridget Colton, her lead legal counsel.
Grace adjusted the microphone, her clear, velvet baritone echoing cleanly through the high-fidelity speakers:
"One year ago, I sat alone beside an untouched anniversary dinner in a dark penthouse," Grace announced to the silent ballroom, her voice filled with deep, genuine pride. "And on that night, I learned that true strength isn't waiting for a man to choose you... it is choosing yourself, protecting your children, and claiming your true light."
She held her champagne glass high under the glittering lights.
"To truth, resilience, and unbroken freedom!"
"To Grace!" the entire room erupted into a warm, unanimous standing ovation, five hundred crystal glasses clinking together under the open sky.

Standing in the shadow of the rear balcony, uninvited and unnoticed by the crowd, stood me.
I wore a plain dark suit, my face gaunt, holding a single bouquet of white gardenias—her favorite flower—in my hands. I watched her from the dark, tears silently tracking down my face, realizing that the queen I had betrayed was now an unshakeable, sovereign monarch who would never need my shadow again.
