Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Marble FloorThe silence in my penthouse executive study on the top floor of the Hayes Tower was suffocating. Outside, the autumn rain slashed violently against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, mirroring the chaotic storm raging in my chest.

At forty-two, I—Richard Hayes—was considered the undisputed ruler of the East Coast’s primary shipping lines, commercial real estate, and underground networks. Men trembled when my name was spoken in boardroom meetings or dark alleys. But standing beside my mahogany desk, staring down at the velvet tray containing Grace’s polished platinum wedding ring, her unspotted black credit card, and two tiny white baby socks, I felt smaller than ash.
My hands trembled violently—hands that had signed multi-million-dollar land acquisitions and fired lethal warnings—as I smoothed out the ultrasound photograph taken two months ago.
PATIENT: GRACE BENNETT-HAYES
GESTATIONAL AGE: 9 WEEKS 2 DAYS
STATUS: EMBRYONIC FEVER / CRITICAL DISTRESS
Beside me stood Marco Vance, my chief security director and personal bodyguard of twelve years. His six-foot-three frame, usually immovable as iron, was tense. His face was pale, his dark eyes fixed on the office door behind us.
"Marco," I rasped out, my voice dipping into a low, terrifyingly unstable register that vibrated with self-hatred and pure fury. "Who entered Saint Jude's Hospital on September 14th at three in the morning?"
Marco swallowed hard, his hands tightening behind his back. "Boss... hospital surveillance footage from that night was wiped twenty minutes after Mrs. Hayes was admitted. But our cyber-forensic team recovered a single offshore wire log from the Cayman Islands."
"Whose account?" I thundered, turning my bloodshot eyes onto him.
"The payment of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars was wired from a shell company registered to the Moretti Syndicate," Marco revealed smoothly, his voice tight. "Specifically... to the private account of your communications director, Vanessa Blake."
The air left my lungs as if I had been struck by a sledgehammer.
Before I could process the terrifying revelation, the heavy double mahogany doors of my study pushed open.
Vanessa Blake stepped into the room. At thirty-two, she was breathtakingly beautiful, wearing a form-fitting crimson silk dress, her dark hair falling in glossy waves over her shoulders. She held a leather portfolio, a manipulative, gentle pout playing on her lips as she walked straight toward my desk.
"Richard, darling," Vanessa purred softly, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. "Why are your guards locking down the elevator shafts? The media is picking up rumors that Grace has walked out on you. We need to draft an official corporate statement—"
BOOM!
I didn't let her finish.
In a split second of explosive, feral fury, I lunged across the desk, my broad hand clamping around Vanessa’s throat, slamming her body flat against the marble pillar beside the fireplace!
Vanessa thrashed her arms in sheer panic, her leather portfolio dropping flat to the floorboards, documents scattering everywhere. Her manicured hands clawed at my fingers, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.
"R-Richard...!" Vanessa choked out, her face turning a terrifying shade of blue. "What... what are you doing?!"
"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, Vanessa," I whispered into her face, my baritone dropping into an icy, subsonic register that dropped the room's temperature to absolute zero. "You took two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the Moretti family to pay a hospital technician on the night my wife miscarried our child."
Vanessa’s eyes dilated in pure, catatonic panic. Her lips trembled as the mask of her innocent sophistication completely shattered.
"I... I did it for us, Richard!" Vanessa shrieked in a ragged, desperate rasp as I tightened my grip just enough to keep her breathing. "Grace was going to tell you about the baby! She was going to use that child to keep you tied to her forever! You would have left me!"
"She was my wife, Vanessa!" I roared, a raw, wounded tear spilling over my lashes as I threw her flat onto the Persian rug. "She was the woman who built this empire with me while you were selling fake PR stories!"

Marcus Vance stepped forward, sliding heavy steel handcuffs behind Vanessa's wrists with a sharp, metallic CLICK.
"Take her to the lower holding cells, Marco," I ordered flatly, turning my back on her as she thrashed and shrieked hysterical pleas. "And bring me the full encrypted recording Grace left behind."
