Chapter 6 - The Unbroken QueenSix months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over the rolling green hills of a grand waterfront estate in Lake Forest, twenty miles north of Chicago.

The eighty-acre property, surrounded by wrought-iron gates and manicured rose gardens, sat overlooking the glittering, blue waters of Lake Michigan.
I sat on a comfortable stone terrace wearing a white linen dress, working on a tablet.
Under my direct leadership as Chairwoman of the newly established Vance-Moretti Foundation, we had constructed three state-of-the-art emergency shelters across Illinois, providing free legal representation, medical care, and safe housing for women escaping domestic violence.
Derek Carter had accepted a plea deal, serving eight years in a state correctional facility, his financial assets completely liquidated to pay for civil restitution and corporate fraud fines.
Footsteps sounded softly on the stone terrace behind me.
Alexander walked out, wearing a simple black linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, carrying two fresh glasses of iced tea.
He set a glass on my table, leaned down, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss against my temple.
I smiled into his touch, turning my head to look into his gray eyes—eyes that held no dark shadows, no cold distance, but a deep, eternal love that filled every corner of my soul.
"How are the Q2 shelter foundation reports looking, Chairwoman?" Alexander murmured softly, wrapping his broad arms around my waist from behind.
"Flawless, Chairman Moretti," I smiled back, resting my head against his broad chest, listening to the steady, peaceful beat of his heart. "We've helped forty women move into safe housing this month alone."
Alexander let out a low, genuine laugh, pulling a small, velvet-lined box from his pocket and setting it gently on the glass table in front of me.
I froze, looking at the box.
I opened it.
Inside rested a breathtaking, flawless eight-carat emerald-cut diamond ring set in platinum, catching the spring sunlight like a star.
Alexander dropped to one knee on the stone terrace, holding my hand between his broad, warm palms, looking up into my eyes with the same unshakeable, fierce devotion that had saved me six months ago under his desk.
"Three years ago, Emily," Alexander whispered, his deep baritone trembling with raw emotion, "you crawled beneath my desk seeking thirty seconds of safety. Today... I want to give you a lifetime."
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over my lashes, reflecting the bright spring sky.
I didn't hesitate. I didn't look back at the dark shadows of the past.

I dropped to my knees beside him on the stone terrace, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling his lips to mine in a deep, sweet, consuming kiss that sealed our promise under the open sky.
"Yes, Alexander," I whispered against his mouth. "A thousand times, yes."
