Chapter 4 - The Golden CageThe top-floor penthouse above L’Etoile was a breathtaking sanctuary of dark timber, floor-to-ceiling glass, and soft, ambient amber lighting.

It overlooked the glittering skyline of Chicago and the dark, quiet expanse of Lake Michigan. Surrounding the perimeter of the building were eight armed guards dressed in sharp dark suits, patrolling the private elevators and stairwells with silent, military efficiency.
For two weeks, I lived inside a sanctuary of absolute peace.
My private guest suite was larger than Derek’s entire townhouse in North Shore, equipped with a fireplace, a marble bathroom, and a closet filled with soft cashmere sweaters, silk dresses, and comfortable shoes that Alexander’s personal staff had provided for me.
I didn't spend my days hiding behind closed doors.
Every morning at 8:00 AM, Alexander and I sat together on the stone terrace overlooking the city, drinking fresh coffee and eating warm pastries.
For the first time in my life, I learned about the real Alexander Moretti.
He wasn't a senseless, bloodthirsty killer. He was an incredibly sharp, strategic sovereign who controlled shipping lines, construction trusts, and real estate networks across three states. He read classical literature, played chess with Marco in the evenings, and spoke about his operations with a quiet, brilliant clarity that fascinated me.
And every day, as I sat beside him on the sunlit terrace, I felt the suffocating fear of the past six years slowly evaporate from my soul, replaced by a deep, unshakeable strength.
On a cold, clear Tuesday morning, Marco walked onto the terrace carrying a thick leather folder.
"Good morning, Miss Emily," Marco bowed respectfully, setting a small, freshly baked blueberry scone on my plate before handing the folder to Alexander.
"What is it, Marco?" Alexander asked, taking a sip of dark espresso.
"Derek Carter filed an emergency petition with the Cook County Chancery Court an hour ago," Marco reported smoothly. "He is seeking a temporary restraining order against you, claiming you kidnapped his wife and are holding her hostage under duress."
I froze, my coffee cup hovering halfway to my lips, my heart taking a sharp, panicked jump in my chest.
Alexander didn't flinch. He didn't even raise an eyebrow. He calmly turned the page of his newspaper, took a slow sip of espresso, and looked at Marco.
"Who is the presiding judge on the Chancery bench this morning, Marco?" Alexander asked softly.
"Judge Jonathan Sterling, Boss," Marco answered with a faint, razor-sharp smile.
Alexander let out a soft, low chuckle.
"Jonathan Sterling owes his judicial seat to my late father's trust, Marco," Alexander murmured, setting his cup down. "Call Sterling's private chambers. Tell him I would like to attend Mr. Carter's emergency hearing personally at two o'clock this afternoon."
He turned his gray eyes to look at me—taking in my fitted cream sweater, my radiant skin, and the total absence of fear in my hazel eyes.
"Would you like to join me for a trip to the courthouse today, Emily?" Alexander asked gently, a dangerous, brilliant glint flashing in his gaze.
May you like
I looked down at my hands—hands that no longer trembled, hands that held no marks—and offered a sharp, radiant smile that mirrored his own.
"I would love to, Alexander," I answered cleanly.
