Chapter 5 - The Courthouse ExecutionAt 2:00 PM, Courtroom 402 of the Cook County Courthouse was packed with junior attorneys, press reporters, and curious onlookers who had caught wind of the high-stakes motion filed by Derek Carter.

Derek sat at the plaintiff's table beside two expensive white-collar defense attorneys he had hired using his remaining liquid savings. He wore a rumpled gray suit, his dark hair messy, his face pale and sunken from fourteen days of career collapse and public embarrassment.

When the heavy oak double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open, conversation died instantly.

Alexander Moretti walked into the room.

He wore an immaculate navy bespoke suit, his long black cashmere coat draped over his shoulders, his broad frame casting a long, commanding shadow across the carpeted aisle.

Flanking him were six armed private security officers in dark suits—and walking comfortably at his side, her arm resting gracefully over his sleeve, was me.

I wore a tailored wine-red silk dress, my dark hair styled in elegant, glossy waves, my heels clicking sharply against the floorboards. I didn't look like a trembling victim who had been dragged out of a restaurant. I looked like an empress stepping into her court.

Derek’s jaw dropped in absolute, horror-stricken shock. He stood up from his chair so fast his knees knocked against the heavy wooden table.

"Emily...?" Derek gasped out, his voice squeaking across the silent courtroom.

"Sit down, Mr. Carter!" Judge Jonathan Sterling barked from the bench, slamming his wooden gavel flat against the sound block. "You will maintain order in my court!"

Alexander guided me smoothly to the defense table, pulling out my chair with effortless, gentlemanly grace before taking his seat beside me.

Derek’s primary attorney, a sleek, silver-haired man named Harrison, stood up nervously, adjusting his glasses.

"Your Honor," Harrison stammered, looking anxiously at Alexander’s cold, unbothered face. "My client, Mr. Carter, has filed an emergency motion alleging that his lawful wife, Emily Carter, was abducted under duress by Mr. Alexander Moretti on the night of October 14th—"

"I was not abducted, Your Honor," my voice cut cleanly across the courtroom.

I stood up from the defense table. I didn't wait for my attorney to speak. I walked straight to the center podium, my posture straight, my chin lifted, looking directly at Judge Sterling.

"My name is Emily Vance," I stated, my baritone dropping into a clear, precise register that echoed off the mahogany walls. "And I stepped into Mr. Moretti's office on October 14th to escape three years of systematic physical, financial, and emotional abuse at the hands of my former husband, Derek Carter."

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery.

Derek’s face turned bright red. "She's lying! She's under his influence! Judge, look at her! She’s wearing his clothes!"

"Silence, Mr. Carter!" Judge Sterling warned, his sharp eyes flashing with deep disgust as he looked down from the bench.

I reached into my silk handbag, pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, and laid it flat on the clerk's desk.

"This drive contains three years of certified medical records from Northwestern Memorial Hospital," I revealed smoothly, "detailing six separate ER visits for 'accidental falls' that occurred while I was married to Derek. It also contains forty-two unredacted audio recordings captured by my personal phone during his violent outbursts."

Harrison, Derek’s attorney, turned to look at his client with a look of sudden, catastrophic realization. "Derek... you told me there were no medical records!"

"She fabricated them!" Derek screamed, stumbling out from behind the table, pointing a shaking finger at me. "She's insane! Judge, I demand an emergency psychiatric evaluation!"

Judge Sterling picked up his silver fountain pen, signed a document resting on his desk, and looked down at Derek with cold, unyielding judgment.

"Mr. Carter," Judge Sterling declared, his voice ringing like an iron hammer. "Your motion for a protective order is denied with prejudice. Furthermore, based on the prima facie evidence of felony domestic assault submitted to this court today, I am issuing an immediate warrant for your arrest, remanded without bail to the Cook County Sheriff's Department."

Two uniformed sheriff's deputies stepped through the side doors of the courtroom, grabbing Derek’s arms, pinning his wrists behind his back with heavy steel handcuffs.

"Emily! Emily, please!" Derek shrieked, struggling frantically as he was dragged toward the holding cells. "I love you! I did everything for you! Tell them to stop! Emily!"

I looked into the face of the coward who had made me bleed over a sink full of dirty dishes.

I didn't shout. I didn't smile. I simply turned my back on him, took Alexander’s offered arm, and walked out of the courtroom into the sunlit corridors of my new life.
