Chapter 5 - The Fall of the PrecinctLorenzo pulled a red legal folder from his inner jacket pocket, dropping it flat onto the reception counter.

"As of nine o'clock this morning, Detective Morrison," Lorenzo revealed smoothly, "the State Attorney General’s Office unsealed a thirty-count federal indictment against you and your syndicate partners for extortion, wire fraud, illegal gambling, and attempted human trafficking."

Derek gasped, his jaw sagging open in total, speech-bound ruin.

Senior Federal Marshal Marcus Sterling stepped out from behind the marble pillar, holding open heavy steel handcuffs.

CLICK. CLICK.

The iron bands locked tightly around Derek’s wrists.

"NO! ISABELLA! HELP ME!" Derek shrieked, weeping hysterically as he was dragged flat across the carpet toward the waiting police sedan outside. "BENEDETTI! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME!"

I turned my back on his screaming, taking a slow, deep breath of the crisp morning air, feeling six months of suffocating fear, pain, and shame evaporate completely from my soul.

Lorenzo turned to me, his dark eyes filled with a deep, weightless pride that lit up his features. He reached out, pulling me tight against his broad chest, holding me flush against his beating heart under the open sky.

"He's gone, Isabella," Lorenzo whispered into my hair. "He will never touch your life again."

We walked down the quiet hallway together into Suite 204—where my mother, Clara, sat in a sunny armchair near the window, holding a sketchpad, drawing yellow sunflowers.

When my mother looked up and saw me walking into the room alongside Lorenzo, her face lit up with a sweet, radiant smile.

"Isabella, my sweet girl," my mother smiled warmly, her voice gentle and clear. "And you brought a handsome friend."

Lorenzo stepped forward, offering a respectful bow to my mother, taking her hand gently into his broad palm.

"It is an honor to meet you, Mrs. Hart," Lorenzo spoke softly, his baritone warm and sincere. "I am Lorenzo."

My mother looked from Lorenzo's handsome face to mine, seeing the deep, unshakeable happiness shining in my hazel eyes, and offered a soft, knowing nod.

"You look after my girl, Lorenzo," my mother whispered.

"With my life, Clara," Lorenzo promised.
