Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Benedetti NameThe rain over North End felt like frozen needles against my face, but as Lorenzo Benedetti’s fingers tightened around mine, a strange, suffocating heat flared through my chest.

I stood paralyzed under the warm yellow awning of the Italian restaurant, my soaked pale-blue scrubs clinging to my skin, staring into the dark, unyielding eyes of Boston’s most feared crime boss.
Across the street, Derek’s retreating figure melted into the shadow of an alleyway, his police badge useless against the terrifying authority that emanated from the man standing beside me. The two broad-shouldered men in tailored suits stepped past us, disappearing into the storm to carry out Lorenzo’s command: Quietly.
"You're shivering, Isabella," Lorenzo repeated, his deep baritone smooth, low, and laced with an absolute, unshakeable command that left zero room for argument.
"I... I should go back to my car," I choked out, my voice cracking into sharp, pathetic fragments. "My Honda is parked near the hospital..."
Lorenzo didn't look back at the street. He used his thumb to gently, reverently wipe a raindrop from my jawline—a gesture so unexpectedly tender from a man whose name made hardened politicians sweat that my heart took a wild, dangerous leap against my ribs.
"Your Honda has a flat rear tire, Isabella," Lorenzo revealed deadpan. "And two of Derek Morrison’s corrupt vice partners were waiting beside your driver's door three minutes ago."
My blood went completely cold. The rain-slicked pavement beneath my white nursing shoes felt like it was tilting on its axis.
"They... they were waiting at my car?" I whispered, my hazel eyes widening in sheer, speech-bound horror.
"Derek owes three hundred thousand dollars to an illegal gambling syndicate in Southie," Lorenzo explained calmly, taking off his heavy dark wool coat and draping it over my wet, trembling shoulders. "He promised his creditors that he would deliver a quiet, vulnerable pediatric nurse who wouldn't raise alarm when she vanished."
The scent of cedarwood, rainfall, and expensive leather wrapped around my senses, cutting through the freezing wind.
Before I could process the apocalyptic reality of what Derek had planned, the sleek, black Maybach pulled up smoothly to the curb, its tinted windows catching the streetlights.
A broad-shouldered driver stepped out, opening the rear door with a respectful bow.
"Get in, Isabella," Lorenzo murmured softly, his hand resting on the small of my back, guiding me forward with an iron gentleness. "Tonight, you sleep in a bed where no one can touch you."
"And tomorrow?" I asked, looking up into his storm-gray eyes.
May you like
Lorenzo offered a small, razor-sharp smile—a look of pure, sovereign intelligence that made my pulse roar in my ears.
"Tomorrow... we dismantle Derek Morrison."
