Chapter 7 - The True BeginningSix months later, the corporate wars and public scandals felt like a lifetime away.

Northstar Technologies was stronger and cleaner than ever, under new ethical governance with Nathan at the helm and me safely appointed as Senior Director of Financial Intelligence. But the greatest change wasn't happening in the boardroom—it was happening in our real lives.
It was a quiet Saturday evening in Nathan’s private penthouse overlooking the Chicago River—the exact same river where we had faced our darkest night months ago.
This time, there were no armed enforcers, no hostile takeovers, and no corporate secrets.
The living room was softly lit by amber lamps and candles, casting a warm glow across the hardwood floors. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the city lights shimmer across the dark water, wrapped comfortably in one of Nathan’s oversized cashmere sweaters.
Footsteps approached softly from behind, and a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist, pulling me back against his warm chest. Nathan rested his chin softly on my shoulder, his lips brushing my neck.
“What are you thinking about?” he murmured, his voice rich and low.
I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, turning slightly to look up into his dark, loving eyes. “I was just thinking about that ordinary Monday afternoon in the cafeteria. When I thought Harper was the only one listening.”
Nathan’s expression softened into that rare, tender smile reserved only for me. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet box—not a corporate contract, not a legal brief, but something infinitely more precious.
He gently stepped around me, kneeling down on one knee right there on the living room floor.
“You told me once that you were waiting for someone who wanted your heart before your body, someone who made you feel safe, someone who saw you,” Nathan said, his voice steady, filled with an emotion so raw and powerful it took my breath away. “You became my peace in a world of war, Maya. You chose me when I had nothing left to offer except my true self. Will you let me spend the rest of my life proving that my heart belongs entirely to you?”
Tears of pure joy welled in my eyes, spilling over my lashes as I looked down at the man who had stopped a billion-dollar deal just to listen to my voice.
“Yes,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “Yes, Nathan. A thousand times yes.”

He slipped the delicate ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into a fierce, passionate embrace. When his lips met mine, there were no secrets left to hide, no fears left to conquer.
The twenty-eight-year-old girl who thought her quiet heart would never be chosen had finally found her home. And the billionaire CEO who had everything money could buy finally possessed the only thing that mattered.
