Chapter 3 - Shadows in the BoardroomBy Wednesday morning, Northstar Technologies was a pressure cooker on the verge of exploding.

The attempted abduction and harassment by Sterling Global agents could no longer be hidden behind corporate NDAs. Detective Vance (the same lead investigator from the previous corporate cases) had set up a temporary command center in Northstar’s executive suite, interviewing witnesses and reviewing the high-definition security footage captured along the riverwalk.
Inside Nathan’s private office, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
I sat on the edge of a leather sofa, clutching a cup of black coffee that had long since gone cold. My wrists were slightly bruised from the scuffle, but my mind was sharper than it had ever been. Across the room, Nathan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his shirtsleeves rolled up, his knuckles sporting a faint bruise from the previous night's fight.
“The board is in full panic mode,” Nathan said, his voice strained. “Victor Vance has called an emergency shareholder meeting for tomorrow morning. He’s claiming that Northstar is financially unstable and that our recent audit discrepancies are grounds for an immediate hostile takeover.”
“They’re bluffing,” I said, standing up and walking over to his desk, where my tablet displayed the decrypted financial records. “They aren't just trying to take over Northstar legally; they’re trying to bury the evidence of their own embezzlement. If we present these offshore routing numbers to the SEC and the federal prosecutor before tomorrow’s meeting, Vance’s entire house of cards collapses.”
Nathan turned away from the window, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch. He walked slowly toward me, closing the distance until the space between us charged with electricity.
“You realize what they’re going to do, don’t you?” Nathan asked softly, his fingers gently brushing against my bruised wrist, his touch as light as a feather. “They’re going to attack your character. They’ve already hired a private firm to dig into your personal life—your background, your quiet life, the fact that you’ve never been in a public relationship. They’re going to paint you as unstable, delusional, and unfit to testify.”
I swallowed hard, feeling the old insecurities try to claw their way back to the surface. For years, I had kept my private life locked away because I was terrified of being judged, of being seen as "not enough" in a world that rushed into intimacy without a second thought.
“Let them try,” I whispered, lifting my chin. “My virginity, my past, my heart—none of those things are weaknesses, Nathan. They are mine. I’m not ashamed of them anymore.”
Nathan’s breath caught. He reached out, his warm palm cupping my cheek, his thumb gently tracing my jawline. The ruthless billionaire CEO vanished entirely, leaving only a man completely captivated by the woman standing before him.
“You are the bravest, most extraordinary person I have ever met, Maya,” he murmured, his face drawing inches from mine. “When I heard you talking in that cafeteria... I didn't just fall in love with your voice. I fell in love with your soul. And I swear to you, no one will ever hurt you again.”
May you like
Before I could answer, the office door swung open abruptly.
Harper stood on the threshold, completely out of breath, holding a fresh printout of a leaked financial report. “Maya, Nathan... you need to see this right now. Sterling Global just released a public statement to the press. And they’re dragging your name directly through the mud.”
