Chapter 1 - The Shattered IllusionThe screen of Nathan’s phone glowed against the dusk of the Chicago evening, casting a cold, artificial light over his sculpted features. The warmth that had transformed his expression moments before vanished, leaving behind the hardened mask of the billionaire CEO who commanded boardrooms and dismantled competitors without blinking.

My hand still lingered near his, the warmth of his touch evaporating into the cool autumn air. My heart, which had just begun to flutter with the fragile hope of something genuine, suddenly hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

“What are you talking about, Nathan?” I asked, my voice barely louder than the murmur of the river below us.

He didn’t answer immediately. He stared at the glowing screen—a text message or an alert that had instantly sabotaged the fragile trust we had built over weeks of stolen lunches and quiet conversations. His jaw tightened, a muscle ticking violently near his temple.

“Maya,” he began, his voice rough, lacking its usual commanding authority. “The night in the conference room. When you spoke to Harper about being twenty-eight, about waiting for someone who wanted your heart before your body... you thought you were safe. But you weren't the only one trapped in a room with secrets.”

A cold draft swept off the water, making me shiver beneath my coat. “What does that have to do with your phone? What secret are you hiding?”

Nathan finally slipped the phone into his pocket, running a hand through his dark hair in a rare display of agitation. “That phone call... it was from my private security detail. And the secret isn't just mine. It’s about why I really stopped signing that contract, Maya. It’s about why I noticed you in the first place.”

Panic flared in my chest. All the warmth, the intimacy, the stolen glances across the office floor suddenly felt like part of a calculated design. The fairy tale I had allowed myself to believe in fractured into sharp, jagged pieces.

“You didn't just happen to hear me,” I whispered, stepping back from him, my eyes burning with sudden, hot tears. “You were listening on purpose. It was all a setup.”

“No! God, no, Maya, listen to me,” he stepped forward, his hands reaching out defensively, though he didn't dare touch me. “I didn't plan it. When I stopped signing that contract, it was because my lead investor was demanding unethical compromises. I was distracted, staring through the frosted glass, and then your voice cut through the silence. When you spoke about wanting someone who saw you, not what you could give them... it hit me like a physical blow.”

He took a ragged breath, the CEO facade completely gone, leaving only a desperate man standing in the dark.

“Because for the last ten years, every woman I’ve dated, every board member I’ve worked with, every person in my circle wanted Nathan Carter, Billionaire, or Nathan Carter, Wallet. No one has ever looked at me and wanted the man underneath. When I heard you, I realized I was searching for the exact same thing you were. But there is something else... something I should have told you before I ever asked for your heart.”

“Tell me now,” I demanded, crossing my arms defensively against the chill, terrified of what was coming next.

“My corporate rivals, led by Victor Vance of Sterling Global, didn't just want to block that contract,” Nathan said, his eyes dark with suppressed fury. “They found out about us. They know you hold the forecasting data that proves Sterling has been embezzling from Northstar. And tonight... they’ve targeted you.”

Before I could process the sheer weight of his words, a pair of black luxury sedans pulled up violently onto the pedestrian walkway beside the river, their high beams blinding us in the dark. Heavy doors slammed shut, and men in dark suits began marching straight toward us.
