Chapter 5 - The Final PleaOne year after the wedding incident, David stood outside the wrought-iron gates of Emily’s suburban estate.

He was gaunt, thirty pounds lighter, wearing a rumpled, faded coat, his expensive tuxedo long gone. His business had gone bankrupt, his car had been repossessed, and he lived in a small rented room on the outskirts of town, working two entry-level clerical jobs to pay off his legal debts.

He watched through the iron bars as four-year-old Leo, Maya, and Toby played on a sunlit wooden playground on the manicured green lawn, giggling happily as Julian Vance pushed them on the swings.

David pressed his face against the cold iron, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. "Leo... Maya... Toby..."

Marcus Vance stepped out from the security gatehouse, stopping three feet from David.

"You need to leave the property, Mr. David," Marcus stated flatly, his hand resting on his coat.

"Marcus... please!" David wept, holding out his hands in a pathetic, groveling plea. "Tell Emily I’m sorry! Tell her I was stupid! I want to see my kids! I want to be their father!"

Emily walked down the stone pathway toward the gate, wearing a tailored cream silk coat, her dark hair falling in glossy waves over her shoulders. Julian walked beside her, his broad arm resting comfortably around her waist.

She stopped behind the iron gate, looking at the broken man who had once thrown her out into the rain.

"David," Emily spoke calmly, her hazel eyes holding no anger, no hatred—only an absolute, weightless indifference. "You had your chance to be a husband and a father four years ago. You chose vanity and cruelty instead."

"Emily! I’ve changed! I have nothing left!" David shrieked through the bars.

"You have the life you built for yourself, David," Emily replied softly. "My children have a father who loves them every single day."

She turned her back on him, taking Julian’s hand, walking back toward her sunlit home as federal marshals arrived at the gate to serve David with a permanent civil trespass injunction.

David screamed her name until his voice cracked, but the heavy gates clicked shut, permanently locking him out of the kingdom he had thrown away.
