Chapter 4 - The Arrival of Julian VanceSix months after the wedding disaster, Emily stood inside the grand glass atrium of Brooks Global Design in downtown Chicago, reviewing the blueprints for a new multi-million-dollar civic museum project.

The heavy double doors of her executive suite opened softly.
Marcus Vance stepped inside, stepping aside to allow a tall, broad-shouldered man in a charcoal bespoke suit to walk into the room.
It was Julian Vance—Marcus’s older brother, a thirty-eight-year-old global logistics titan and venture capitalist who controlled the primary maritime shipping lanes across Lake Michigan.
Julian possessed striking gray-hazel eyes, a severe, carved-granite face, and an aura of quiet, absolute authority that commanded every boardroom he entered. He was a man who had never married, devoted entirely to his business, until he saw Emily's design work six months ago.
Julian walked over to her wide mahogany desk, holding a sleek leather folder bound by gold seals.
"Donna Emily," Julian spoke softly, his low, gravelly baritone filling the room. "The board of directors at Vance Maritime has officially approved your master architecture plan for our new twenty-million-dollar headquarters."
Emily smiled, setting her stylus down, extending her hand. "Thank you, Mr. Vance. My team worked hard on the light integration."
Julian didn't just shake her hand. He held it gently, his thumb brushing over her knuckles with deep, genuine respect, his gray eyes burning with an intense, unreserved admiration.
"It wasn't just the light integration, Emily," Julian murmured, his voice dropping into a tender, velvet register. "It was the soul you put into the stone."
Behind them, the door opened, and four-year-old Leo, Maya, and Toby ran into the office after their private art lesson, holding hand-drawn paintings of ships.
Julian immediately let go of her hand, dropping down onto one knee on the hardwood floor in front of the triplets, offering a warm, genuine smile that lit up his severe features.
"Are those three-masted schooners, Leo?" Julian asked, pointing to Leo's drawing with real interest.
Leo’s eyes lit up. "Yes! With gold sails!"

"A very fine design," Julian nodded solemnly. "We should build one at the shipyard."
Emily watched the powerful titan sitting on her office floor, chatting happily with her children, and felt a warm, quiet spark blooming deep inside her heart—a feeling she thought had died four years ago.
