Chapter 7 - Dawn Over the HudsonThe early morning sun cast a brilliant golden glow over the tranquil waters of the Hudson River, painting the sky in shades of bruised lavender and warm amber.

Back at the Westchester estate, the household was blissfully quiet. Upstairs in the nursery, three cribs held three sleeping angels—Leo, Maya, and Noah—breathing softly in deep, untroubled slumber.

Down on the private dock, Claire stood wrapped in a thick wool cardigan, leaning against the wooden railing. The bitter winds of the past had vanished, replaced by the crisp, invigorating promise of a brand-new day.

Footsteps approached softly behind her, and a pair of warm, muscular arms slid around her waist, pulling her back against a solid chest. Julian rested his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair.

“You’re up early,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her neck.

“I couldn't sleep,” Claire whispered, leaning back into his embrace. She looked out across the shimmering water. “Sometimes it still feels like a dream. A year ago, I was standing in an empty apartment with frozen bank accounts, wondering how I was going to survive twenty-four hours. Now... look at us.”

Julian turned her gently in his arms, his stormy gray eyes filled with a deep, unwavering devotion. He reached into the pocket of his trousers and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box.

Claire’s breath hitched.

Julian opened the box. Inside rested a magnificent ring—a flawless, emerald-cut diamond flanked by three smaller, brilliant stones, catching the morning light like captured stars.

“The first time a man handed you a ring,” Julian said softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion, “it came with a signature line, an eviction notice, and a cold heart. I don't want to give you a contract, Claire. I want to give you a lifetime.”

He dropped slowly to one knee on the wooden boards of the dock, the morning breeze whipping his dark hair.

“You are the anchor of my storm, the mother of my heart, and the absolute light of my existence,” Julian said, looking up at her with naked, beautiful vulnerability. “Claire Mercer... will you do me the incredible honor of making me the luckiest man alive, and marry me?”

Tears streamed freely down Claire’s face, but this time, there was no pain, no fear, and no doubt. Only an overwhelming, radiant joy.

“Yes,” she whispered, her voice breaking with emotion. “Yes, Julian. A thousand times, yes.”

Julian slid the ring onto her finger, standing up to crush her against his chest in a passionate, breathless embrace that lifted her off her feet. As they kissed against the backdrop of the rising sun over the Hudson, Claire knew that the twenty-four hours Ethan Mercer had given her to disappear hadn't destroyed her at all. They had simply been the dark night before the brightest dawn of her life.
