Chapter 1 - The Stranger in the RainThe violent contraction tore through Claire’s abdomen with a force that left her gasping for breath, her fingers clawing at the worn pleather seat of the downtown Manhattan bus.

With twenty-three dollars in cash, a single suitcase, and an ultrasound photo pressed safely against her chest, Claire had felt the terrifying, cold reality of absolute abandonment. But as a second, sharper wave of pain doubled her over, warm fluid rushed down her legs. Her water had broken. The shocked gasp of the elderly woman sitting across the aisle pierced through the hum of the engine.

Before panic could completely swallow her, the bus hissed to a sudden, jarring halt. Headlights flooded the rain-streaked interior, casting blinding reflections across the glass. Through the condensation-fogged windows, Claire saw a sleek black town car parked illegally right beside the bus door.

A man in a heavy dark wool coat stepped out into the pouring rain. He didn’t bother with an umbrella. Water slicked his dark hair across his forehead as he scanned the interior of the bus, his sharp, angular features carved with a fierce, uncompromising intensity. Their eyes locked across the narrow aisle.

For one impossible second, the man froze. A jolt of electric recognition—or perhaps pure, primal instinct—flashed across his striking features. Then, without a moment’s hesitation, he sprinted through the pelting rain, vaulted up the bus steps, and pushed past the paralyzed driver.

“Step back!” the driver yelled, but the stranger ignored him completely.

He dropped to one knee beside Claire’s seat, his large, warm hands gently gripping her trembling shoulders. Up close, his eyes were a piercing, stormy gray, filled with an inexplicable, raw urgency that made Claire’s breath catch.

“I’ve got you,” he said, his voice deep, steady, and vibrating with an authority that commanded the entire chaotic bus. “My name is Julian Vance. You’re going to be okay.”

Claire didn't know who Julian Vance was. She didn't know why a total stranger was looking at her with such fierce, protective devotion in the middle of a New York storm. But as another contraction crested, tearing a sob from her throat, she clutched his coat lapels and whispered, “My babies... they’re coming too early.”

Julian didn't hesitate. Without waiting for paramedics, he scooped Claire effortlessly into his arms, carrying her out of the bus and directly into the dry, leather-scented warmth of his waiting car, launching a sequence of events that would soon bring Ethan Mercer crashing down from his high-society pedestal.
