Chapter 4 - The Empire Strikes BackWhile Claire spent the next six weeks healing and bonding with her triplets in the specialized NICU of St. Jude’s, Julian Vance was systematically executing a masterclass in corporate and legal destruction.

Ethan Mercer had returned to Manhattan flush with arrogance, smug in the belief that Claire had vanished into obscurity without a penny to her name. He had immediately moved Sabrina Vale into their old, sprawling Fifth Avenue apartment, flaunted her on red carpets, and instructed his legal team to push forward with a default divorce settlement that would leave Claire with nothing.
He assumed he was untouchable. He assumed wrong.
On a crisp Tuesday morning in November, Ethan walked into the glass-walled boardroom of Mercer Media & Investments for a routine quarterly meeting with his senior investors and board directors. Expecting to sign off on a lucrative real estate acquisition in Los Angeles, he instead found a somber room filled with federal marshals, Securities and Exchange Commission investigators, and his corporate legal counsel, Martin Keller, sweating profusely in the corner.
“What is the meaning of this?” Ethan snapped, dropping his leather briefcase onto the mahogany table. “Who authorized federal agents in my boardroom?”
A tall, impeccably tailored man stepped out from the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. It wasn't an investigator. It was Julian Vance.
Ethan’s face drained of color. He had encountered Julian only once before at a charity auction years ago—a man whose wealth and influence completely dwarfed his own.
“Good morning, Mercer,” Julian said smoothly, his voice dropping an octave into a chilling, polite register. “I believe you’re familiar with my holding firm, Vance Global. As of 8:00 AM today, my legal division has acquired controlling interest in eighty-two percent of your company's outstanding debt.”
Ethan stumbled backward, gripping the edge of the table. “That’s impossible! My portfolio is secured by—by overseas liquidity! You can’t just—!”
“I can, and I just did,” Julian interrupted coldly, walking slowly toward him like a predator closing in on a wounded deer. He tossed a thick manila folder onto the table in front of Ethan. “Furthermore, federal investigators have found substantial evidence of corporate fraud, tax evasion, and insider trading funneled through shell accounts in the Cayman Islands—accounts you conveniently used to fund your lavish lifestyle with Miss Sabrina Vale while freezing your wife's bank accounts.”
Martin Keller buried his face in his hands, whispering, “I told you we shouldn't have touched her funds, Ethan...”

“You’re ruined, Mercer,” Julian concluded, his stormy eyes locking onto Ethan with absolute disdain. “Your assets are frozen, your accounts are seized, and an arrest warrant is currently being executed at your Fifth Avenue apartment where your little actress friend is busy packing her bags. You threw away a magnificent woman and three healthy children for a hollow fraud. Now, you get to experience what true destitution feels like.”
As federal agents stepped forward and clamped steel handcuffs around Ethan’s wrists, the disgraced executive collapsed into his chair, realizing too late that the woman he had discarded like trash was protected by a titan who owned the world.
