Chapter 6 - The Manhattan BallroomSix months later, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel glittered beneath ten thousand crystal teardrops, hosting the annual winter gala of the New York Real Estate and Technology Association.

It was the most exclusive social event of the year, bringing together billionaires, venture capitalists, and society elites.

Near the center of the ballroom, standing near a towering display of white winter roses, Claire Mercer—now officially Claire Sterling-Vance, having reclaimed her maiden name before her new chapter—commanded every eye in the room.

She wore a breathtaking, backless midnight-blue velvet gown that swept the floor with quiet elegance, a diamond necklace catching the chandelier light with every movement. Six months ago, she had been a terrified, exhausted pregnant woman sitting on a municipal bus with twenty-three dollars in her pocket.

Now, she was the newly appointed CEO of Sterling-Vance Global, a multi-billion-dollar technology conglomerate holding the patents that Ethan had once tried to steal.

And her three babies—healthy, thriving, and sleeping soundly in the care of trusted nurses upstairs in the hotel’s presidential suite—were the undisputed lights of her life.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

A murmur rippled through the crowd near the entrance.

Ethan Mercer stumbled into the ballroom. He looked like a ghost of his former self. His suit hung loosely on his frail frame, his hair was unkempt, and his eyes darted nervously around the room. Ever since the federal indictments dropped, he had been blacklisted from the tech industry, abandoned by his high-society friends, and left facing a potential ten-year prison sentence for wire fraud and embezzlement.

He had managed to slip past security by bribing a catering assistant, desperate to beg for mercy from the people who now held the keys to his freedom.

His gaze swept across the glittering room until it landed on the stage.

There, standing at the podium to deliver the keynote address, was Claire.

And standing right beside her, with one hand resting protectively at the small of her back in a gesture of absolute, unwavering devotion, was Julian Vance.

Ethan felt the breath leave his lungs. The contrast between what he had thrown away and what he had lost was too agonizing to bear. He had thought twenty-four hours was enough to erase a woman, enough to discard a mother, enough to build a new life on a foundation of lies.

Instead, those twenty-four hours had become the exact moment his empire turned to dust.

Claire stepped up to the microphone, her dark eyes scanning the ballroom before resting for a fraction of a second on the broken man standing near the back doors. She didn't glare. She didn't sneer. She simply looked at him with the quiet, absolute pity one reserves for a stranger who had lost everything of value.

Then, she smiled—radiant, free, and entirely untouchable—and began to speak.
