Chapter 4 - The Boardroom AmbushThree weeks later, the corporate headquarters of Mercer Technologies in Midtown Manhattan was humming with its usual arrogant energy.

Ethan Mercer strode through the glass double doors of the executive suite, looking tanned, relaxed, and entirely pleased with himself. His trip to Malibu with Sabrina had been splashed across every entertainment blog, and while the tabloids buzzed with gossip, Ethan didn't care. In the cutthroat world of tech startups, bad publicity was just another form of brand awareness. And best of all, the messy business of his divorce was allegedly wrapping up quietly. His lawyer, Martin Keller, had assured him that Claire had vanished into the woodwork, too intimidated and exhausted with newborns to put up a fight.
Ethan loosened his silk tie as he entered his corner office, tossing his briefcase onto the mahogany desk.
“Miss Gable,” Ethan called out without looking up, pressing the intercom button. “Get Martin Keller on the line. I want to finalize the default judgment on the divorce papers before lunch. I want her completely wiped off the corporate registry.”
The intercom crackled, but it wasn't his secretary’s voice that answered.
“Mr. Mercer, your legal counsel is already here. And so is your wife.”
Ethan frowned. He pushed the office door open and stepped out into the executive reception area.
What he saw froze him in his tracks.
Sitting in the plush leather armchairs were Martin Keller—sweating profusely, his tie loosened, looking as though he had just survived a shipwreck—and two towering attorneys in sharp gray suits carrying leather briefcases.
Standing near the window, looking breathtaking in a tailored emerald-green silk dress that completely masked any lingering traces of her postpartum recovery, was Claire.
She wasn't the pale, broken woman he had thrown out into the rain three weeks ago. Her posture was immaculate, her dark hair styled in sleek waves, and her eyes carried a cool, devastating authority that made Ethan’s stomach drop.
“Claire?” Ethan stammered, his confident smirk instantly melting into confusion. “What... what is the meaning of this? How did you get in here? Security was supposed to—!”
“Security answers to the majority stakeholder, Ethan,” a smooth, resonant voice echoed from the private hallway.
Julian Vance stepped into the reception area, wearing his signature dark cashmere coat, his hands casually tucked into his trouser pockets. He walked with the heavy, unchallengeable stride of a man who owned the building—which, legally speaking, he now did.
Ethan’s face drained of color. He recognized Julian instantly from financial conventions and Forbes profile spreads. “Mr. Vance... I—I didn't realize you had a meeting with Mercer Technologies—”
“I don't have a meeting with Mercer Technologies, Ethan,” Julian interrupted smoothly, stopping beside Claire and resting a hand lightly on the back of her chair. “I am here representing Vesta Holdings—the primary equity holder that just executed a hostile debt takeover of your entire corporate portfolio.”
The silence in the room was absolute. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents through the ceiling.
“A... a debt takeover?” Ethan laughed nervously, his eyes darting between Julian and Martin Keller. “That’s impossible! We are fully capitalized! Martin, tell him! Tell him this is a mistake!”
Martin Keller couldn't even look his client in the eye. He stared down at his leather portfolio, whispering hoarsely, “Mr. Mercer... Mr. Vance bought out our revolving credit lines at dawn. Every single asset, patent, and subsidiary we own is currently under receivership.”
Ethan staggered half a step backward, catching himself against the edge of a mahogany table. “No... no! That’s my company! I built that! I built all of it!”
Claire stood up slowly from her chair. She walked across the polished hardwood floor, her heels clicking with a crisp, rhythmic precision that sounded like a ticking clock running out of time for her husband.

She stopped just a foot away from him, looking up into his panicked, sweat-slicked face.
“You didn't build anything, Ethan,” Claire said, her voice clear, calm, and utterly merciless. “You just rented the space while I wrote the code. And today, the lease is up.”
