Chapter 4 - The Boardroom ExecutionThe Monday morning air inside the glass-walled conference room on the forty-second floor of Sterling & Croft was thick with tension.

Damian Cross sat near the end of the long mahogany table, adjusting his tie with an air of arrogant nonchalance. Despite the humiliating ejection from the Astor Grand hotel two nights ago, Damian had spent Sunday convincing himself and Victoria that Julian Vance’s outburst was nothing more than a wealthy eccentric defending a stray charity worker.
“Relax, Victoria,” Damian whispered to the heiress sitting beside him. Her face was pale, dark circles shadowing her eyes under heavy makeup. “My firm brings in eight million dollars in billables annually. Vance Enterprises might be a tech giant, but they wouldn't pull our financing over some little coffee shop girl.”
The heavy double doors at the end of the conference room swung open.
Senior Partner Richard Croft stepped in, followed not by junior associates, but by three corporate restructuring attorneys in sharp gray suits—and Julian Vance, flanked by his chief legal counsel.
Everyone in the room stood up instantly.
“Mr. Vance,” Richard Croft said, hurrying forward with an obsequious smile, extending his hand. “We weren't expecting you personally for the quarterly audit review. To what do we owe the honor?”
Julian didn't take Croft’s hand. He simply walked past him, pulling out a chair at the head of the table and sitting down in absolute silence. His dark gaze swept slowly across the room until it landed squarely on Damian Cross.
Damian felt a cold knot twist violently in his stomach.
“Mr. Croft,” Julian said, his voice echoing off the glass walls. “I am here today to exercise Clause 14-B of our master service agreement.”
Croft blinked, his smile faltering. “Clause 14-B? But that’s the immediate termination and asset freeze clause... that’s only invoked in cases of gross corporate negligence or severe ethical violations by partner-track associates.”
“Correct,” Julian nodded calmly. He slid a thick manila folder across the mahogany table toward Croft. “Specifically, associate Damian Cross. Our compliance team has uncovered systematic financial falsification, insider trading leaks tied to his personal accounts, and corporate espionage involving competitor firms.”
Damian shot out of his chair, his face turning the color of curdled milk. “That’s a lie! You can’t do that! I have backing from the Langford family!”
“The Langford family trust was frozen by federal marshals this morning at 8:00 AM,” Julian stated smoothly, finally looking at Damian with cold, pitying contempt. “Your prospective father-in-law is currently facing twenty counts of wire fraud. As for your position here, Mr. Cross? You were fired three minutes ago when I bought out the remaining equity shares of this firm.”
Silence consumed the room.

Damian stared at Julian in absolute horror. “You... you bought the firm? Just to fire me?”
“You poured champagne on my fiancée’s dress,” Julian said softly, standing up from his chair. “I told you that dress was the least expensive thing you would lose tonight.”
