Chapter 1 - The Descent of the DragonThe champagne still dripped from the hem of Ava’s black dress, forming a dark, shimmering puddle on the imported Italian marble of the Astor Grand ballroom. The ice-cold liquid had soaked through the fabric, clinging to her skin and turning humiliation into a physical shiver that wracked her frame. Around them, the collective intake of breath from forty elite guests had died away, replaced by an suffocating, electric stillness.

Damian Cross’s smug, champagne-fueled grin froze halfway across his face. The glass in his hand wobbled, a stray drop spilling over his immaculate silk-blend cuff. His eyes darted past Ava, trying to project a cool dominance that his suddenly pale complexion flatly contradicted.
“I’m sorry, and you are?” Damian sneered, forcing a brittle laugh as he looked at the man standing directly behind Ava. “Unless you’re a sponsor of this charity gala, I suggest you stay out of—'”
The sentence died in his throat.
The man who had just spoken did not raise his voice. He didn’t need to. At thirty-six, Julian Vance possessed an absolute, terrifying gravity that commanded every room he entered. His charcoal bespoke suit was cut from fabric that cost more than Damian’s entire wardrobe, but it was the cold, obsidian stillness in his dark eyes that made veteran politicians and Wall Street billionaires step aside when he walked past.
Julian didn't look at Damian. His gaze was fixed entirely on Ava. Without a word of hesitation, he unbuttoned his heavy black cashmere overcoat, draped it gently over Ava’s shivering shoulders, and pulled her a fraction of an inch closer to his side.
The scent of cedar, expensive leather, and clean rain enveloped her.
“Julian?” Victoria Langford’s voice cracked slightly, the wealthy heiress suddenly sounding like a terrified schoolgirl. She dropped her champagne flute; it shattered against the marble with a sharp, violent crash that made everyone flinch. “Julian Vance? What—what are you doing? This... this girl is just a hired hand—”
“This woman,” Julian interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so quiet and lethal that the crystal chandeliers overhead seemed to vibrate, “is my fiancée. And the man who just poured a glass of cheap wine on her has exactly five seconds to apologize before I strip every single municipal contract his firm holds in the tri-state area.”
Silence fell like an anvil.
Damian’s jaw slacked. His eyes darted between Ava—the barista he had discarded by text message six months ago—and Julian Vance, the ruthless billionaire tech titan whose venture capital firm controlled half the commercial real estate in Manhattan.
“Fiancée?” Damian choked out, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. “That’s... that’s impossible. She worked two jobs in Brooklyn! She wore clothes from thrift stores! She was my—she was nobody!”

“She was mine,” Julian corrected softly, stepping forward until he stood towering over Damian. “And you, Mr. Cross, just made the most expensive mistake of your entire corporate life.”
Before Damian could stammer another syllable, Julian turned his attention to the ballroom doors, where two nervous hotel managers and four of Julian’s private security guards were already marching toward them with cold, calculated precision.
