Chapter 6 - The Final FalloutBy noon the following day, the digital shockwave we unleashed had completely restructured the city’s political and financial landscape.

The encrypted ledger I downloaded from the Vanguard mainframe contained the names of three city council members, four corporate CEOs, and dozens of high-ranking syndicate operatives involved in money laundering, extortion, and corporate sabotage. By midday, federal agents and local task forces—backed by Ethan’s airtight legal documentation—raided offices across the Loop, arresting Daniel Harper and freezing all Vanguard assets nationwide.

I sat at my desk on the forty-third floor of Moretti Tower, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering expanse of Lake Michigan under a brilliant afternoon sun.

The door to my office opened quietly.

Ethan walked in. He had changed back into his immaculate charcoal suit, his sleeves rolled up slightly, holding two cups of black coffee. He looked tired, the shadows beneath his eyes telling the story of a sleepless night, but there was an unmistakable lightness in his posture.

He set a cup down on my desk without a word and leaned against the edge, looking at me.

"The federal prosecutor just called," Ethan said quietly. "Daniel Harper is cooperating. Vanguard is finished in the Midwest. Your name has been cleared from every watch list, and your academic records at Northwestern have been fully reinstated if you ever decide to finish your master's."

I picked up the coffee cup, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic. "And what about you, Mr. Moretti? Are you still going to treat me like a prisoner locked away in a fortress?"

Ethan’s gaze softened. He pushed off the desk, walking around to stand right in front of me. He reached out, gently taking the coffee cup from my hands and setting it aside, before pulling me up out of my chair.

"You were never a prisoner, Claire," he said, his voice dropping into that deep, husky register that always made my breath catch. "You were the only reason I survived the corporate bloodbath this city demands. I built my empire to keep people out. But from the moment I met you... I realized I only ever wanted to let you in."

My heart hammered against my ribs, but this time, there was no fear. Only the dizzying, exhilarating certainty of a fall I had been waiting for all along.

"You're impossible, Ethan Moretti," I whispered, smiling up at him.

"I know," he replied, and before I could say another word, his lips met mine—deep, demanding, and utterly final.
