Chapter 5 - Trapped in the Core"Self-destruct sequence!" I gasped, staring at my laptop screen as red warning banners flooded the interface. "They’ve triggered a hard wipe! If we don’t override the mainframe terminal on the far wall, all their financial logs will incinerate in sixty seconds!"
"Lucas, cover the entrance!" Ethan yelled, shoving me toward the central console. "Claire, work your magic! Now!"
Gunfire suddenly erupted outside the server room door. Muffled shouts and the distinct pop of suppressed weapons echoed down the concrete corridor. Vanguard’s quick-response team had arrived faster than our intelligence predicted.
I didn't let the panic paralyze me. I slammed my hands onto the console, typing commands at lightning speed, routing my decryption payload straight into the core processor.
Forty seconds.
Behind me, Ethan stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Lucas near the open doorway, returning fire down the narrow hallway with cold, ruthless precision. Every shot was calculated, disciplined, and terrifyingly efficient.
Twenty seconds.
"I'm in!" I yelled over the deafening whine of the cooling fans. "Downloading the primary ledger now! Mirroring to my local drive!"
Ten seconds.
A bullet ricocheted off the steel doorframe inches from Ethan’s head, sending a shower of sparks cascading across the floor. He didn't even flinch. He just shifted his stance, firing two rapid shots that silenced the shooter lunging around the corner.
Five... Four... Three...
"Done!" I ripped the cable out of the console, grabbed my laptop, and spun around. "The data is secured!"

"Move, move, move!" Ethan roared, grabbing my hand and dragging me toward the emergency exit at the back of the server room just as a deafening explosion rocked the floor above us, sending chunks of concrete raining down from the ceiling.
We burst out into the alleyway just as the entire warehouse interior erupted in a wall of orange fire and black smoke, the self-destruct mechanism finally consuming what remained of Vanguard’s digital empire in Chicago.
