Chapter 3 - The Digital TrapBy dawn, Ethan’s study had been transformed into a tactical war room. Three separate monitors glowed in the dim light, displaying cascading lines of code, encrypted satellite feeds of downtown Chicago, and financial tracking charts linked to the Vanguard Syndicate's shell companies.

I sat at the main terminal, my fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard, doing what I did best: hunting ghosts in the machine.

"The bug Daniel planted in that pen," I said without looking up, "wasn't just a physical tracker. It was a localized proxy router. It tried to handshake with our corporate server the second he connected it to his phone's hotspot."

Ethan stood behind me, one hand resting on the back of my chair, his presence a heavy, grounding anchor. "Did you trace the handshake?"

"I did better than that," I smirked, a fierce, vindictive thrill sparking through my veins. "I didn't just block it. I reversed the ping, fed their receiver a corrupted packet, and mapped the exact node they’re using to route their communications out of an abandoned warehouse district in Cicero."

Lucas, standing near the door with a tablet in hand, let out a low whistle. "Well, damn. Remind me never to get on your bad side, boss's girl."

"She's not my girl, Lucas," Ethan corrected instantly, though his jaw tightened and a faint flush touched his neck. "She's an architect."

"For now," Lucas muttered under his breath with a knowing grin, walking out to brief the strike team.

I turned in my chair to look up at Ethan. "You're enjoying this, aren't you? The corporate tech billionaire playing tactical commander."

"I am a man who hates losing control," Ethan replied, leaning down until his face was inches from mine. "And no one threatens what belongs to me."

"I don't belong to you, Ethan," I murmured, though my heart was hammering a frantic, traitorous rhythm against my ribs.

"Keep telling yourself that," he whispered, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before he stood up and turned back to the monitors. "Lucas's team is mobilizing. The Cicero warehouse is Vanguard’s primary data relay station in the Midwest. If we hit their server cluster tonight, we can legally and digitally bankrupt their entire operation before dawn."

"And if we fail?" I asked.

Ethan’s expression hardened into stone. "We don't fail."
