Chapter 2 - The Fortress on Lake Shore DriveThe ride to Ethan’s private estate on Lake Shore Drive was spent in a suffocating silence. Lucas drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting near a concealed shoulder holster, checking the rearview mirror every twenty seconds.

When the car rolled through the heavy wrought-iron security gates, the estate looked more like a fortress than a home. High stone walls topped with motion-sensor cameras surrounded a sprawling limestone mansion overlooking the dark, churning expanse of Lake Michigan.

As soon as we stepped inside, a housekeeper hurried over with a warm woolen throw, but Ethan waved her away.

"Get into my study," Ethan commanded, walking straight toward a massive mahogany desk at the end of a long, book-lined hallway.

I followed him, slamming the heavy study door behind me. My adrenaline had finally transitioned from shock into pure, unadulterated fury. I dropped my bag onto a leather armchair and glared at him.

"You don't get to treat me like a piece of property, Ethan," I said, my voice rising. "You don't get to orchestrate my life, monitor my lunch dates, and then lock me up in this mausoleum under the pretense of 'protecting' me!"

Ethan yanked off his tie, tossing it onto the desk, and turned to face me. The raw intensity in his eyes stopped me dead in my tracks.

"You think I wanted this?" he shouted, the sound echoing off the high ceilings. "You think I wanted to spend every waking hour terrified that some hitman from Vanguard was going to put a bullet through your window? I didn't just hire you, Claire. From the moment I saw your code submissions during the tech summit two years ago, you were all I could think about. When I found out Vanguard had put a bounty on your digital signature because you accidentally stumbled into their money-laundering ledger, I moved heaven and earth to bring you under my roof."

The room went completely still. The rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner was the only sound.

"A bounty?" I whispered, my anger faltering as cold dread settled in my stomach.

"They think you downloaded the decryption keys before you left your old firm," Ethan said, stepping closer, his voice softening into a raw, desperate plea. "Even though you didn't, they won't believe you. To them, you're a loose end that needs to be permanently erased. That’s why Daniel approached you today. He wasn't on a date, Claire. He was testing whether you still had access."

I looked down at my hands, remembering how casual Daniel had looked, how smoothly that pen had slipped onto the table. If Ethan hadn't intervened, I might have walked out of that restaurant straight into a trap from which I’d never return.

"What do we do now?" I asked quietly, the fight completely draining out of me.

May you like

Ethan reached out, his warm fingers gently gripping my chin, tilting my face up so I had to look into his dark, unwavering eyes.

"We stop hiding," he said. "We draw them out, break their network piece by piece, and finish this once and for all. But you stay by my side. Every second. Do you understand?"
