Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in Lake ForestAt 2:30 AM, the Maybach glided through the iron security gates of the Romano Estate in Lake Forest, thirty miles north of Chicago.

The estate was a sprawling stone fortress surrounded by high walls, private security cameras, and thirty armed guards patrolling the sunlit courtyard.
Gabriel didn't let the medical staff carry me into the house. He carried me up the grand marble staircase himself, taking me straight to the master suite on the second floor—a room no assistant had ever set foot inside during four years of service.
Dr. Vance, a trusted family physician, spent two hours cleaning my wounds, applying silver-sulfadiazine bandages across my ribs, and setting my fractured left wrist in a lightweight fiberglass cast.
"She has three cracked ribs, severe dehydration, and soft-tissue trauma, Gabriel," Dr. Vance explained quietly near the fireplace as I lay propped up on Egyptian cotton pillows. "She survived on pure willpower. She needs absolute rest."
"Thank you, David," Gabriel replied softly, handing the doctor a glass of vintage scotch before closing the master suite doors, locking the heavy deadbolt from the inside.
He walked across the plush carpet, unbuttoning his dark suit jacket, dropping onto one knee beside my bed.
He reached out his broad hand, carefully, reverently taking my uninjured right hand into his palm, leaning his forehead against my knuckles.
"Four years, Clara," Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with a profound, agonizing regret. "Four years you sat outside my office, organizing my life, protecting my secrets, while I let Marcus Kensington and his family treat you like an employee."
"Gabriel..." I murmured, my voice soft and raspy from dehydration. "The ledger... did you read page forty-two?"
Gabriel raised his head, his storm-gray eyes holding mine with an unshakeable, terrifying intensity.
"I read every page, Clara," Gabriel revealed. "Page forty-two details how Sloan Kensington and her uncle spent two years poisoning my father's medical prescriptions to force the merger between our families. They didn't just want a wedding, Clara. They wanted to execute me on our honeymoon and take the entire Midwest territory."

My heart slammed against my ribs. "They were going to kill you...?"
"They would have succeeded," Gabriel confessed, his long fingers tightening gently around mine. "If my invisible assistant hadn't hidden the ledger before they caught her... and bled for thirty hours to keep my family alive."
