Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Don's FilterThe silence that followed the breach was absolute, suffocating, and terrifying.

Gabriel didn't look at the three captors. He didn't look at the black leather ledger sitting on the rusted table.

His storm-gray eyes locked onto my shivering, broken frame lying in the pool of my own blood on the concrete. He saw the iron chains cutting into my wrists, the swollen purple bruising across my jaw, and my pale-blue blouse torn and soaked red across my ribs.

The cold, ruthless expression of Chicago's most feared mafia boss vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, apocalyptic fury that made the temperature in the basement drop below zero.

"Boss...!" one of Marcus Kensington's men stammered, raising his weapon with a shaking hand. "She... she stole your ledger! We caught her for you!"

Gabriel didn't speak a single word.

THWIP. THWIP. THWIP.

Three muffled shots rang out in rapid succession.

The three captors collapsed onto the concrete before their weapons even cleared their holsters, their bodies motionless in the dust.

Gabriel dropped his silenced sidearm onto the floor, completely ignoring the tactical protocol his chief lieutenant, Leo, was shouting from the stairwell.

He sprinted across the blood-stained concrete, dropping onto his knees flat on the freezing floor beside me, his broad, calloused hands coming up to frame my pale, bruised face.

His hands—hands that had signed execution orders and built an empire worth billions—were trembling violently.

"Clara..." Gabriel rasped out. His deep baritone, usually so smooth and unshakeable, cracked into raw, agonizing fragments. "My God... Clara..."

"Gabriel..." I choked out, a wave of dark dizziness threatening to swallow my mind as tears of pure, weightless relief spilled over my lashes. "I... I didn't take it..."

"Hush, my love," Gabriel wept softly, his thumb gently, reverently wiping blood from my cheek. "Don't speak. Don't say a word."

He reached into his jacket, pulled out a tactical combat knife, and severed the heavy iron chains around my wrists with a single, furious strike against the metal.

He scooped my broken frame into his broad arms, pulling me flush against his solid chest, lifting me off the freezing floor as if I weighed no more than a feather.

"Leo!" Gabriel roared toward the doorway, his voice echoing through the basement like thunder. "GET DR. VANCE TO THE ESTATE! CANCEL THE RECEPTION AT THE MERIDIAN! AND PUT A LEADER-LEVEL LOCKDOWN ON THE KENSINGTON FAMILY!"

Leo stepped into the room, staring at the black leather ledger on the table, then at Gabriel holding me like his entire life depended on it.

"Boss..." Leo stammered. "The wedding is in forty-eight hours. What about Sloan Kensington?"

May you like

Gabriel turned his head slowly, his dark eyes burning with an absolute, lethal promise that made even Leo stumble back two steps.

"The wedding is dead, Leo," Gabriel declared flatly. "And by midnight... so is anyone who touched her."
