Chapter 5 - Shadows DissolvingThe fallout of Marcus’s arrest was swift, public, and absolute. Within forty-eight hours, the disgraced consultant was indicted on multiple counts of fraud, forgery, and corporate sabotage, ensuring he would spend years behind bars rather than destroying anyone else's life.

Back in the quiet sanctuary of the Maple Street house, the atmosphere felt entirely transformed. The lingering ghosts of suspicion and fear that had haunted me for months had finally been swept away by the cold, hard light of truth.

Declan had practically moved in, though he asked permission before every step—a poignant reminder of how much he had changed. He had converted the small guest room upstairs into a magnificent, sunlit nursery, spending hours assembling cribs, organizing tiny clothes, and painting the walls a soft, soothing shade of pale blue.

One evening, while James was sleeping soundly in his new crib upstairs, Declan and I sat on the living room floor in front of the crackling fireplace. The snow was falling again outside, painting the Seattle streets in pristine white, but inside, the room was warm and filled with the gentle hum of soft jazz.

"I still can't believe he did it," I said softly, resting my head against Declan’s shoulder as he wrapped his arm around me, pulling me tight against his chest. "I let a single piece of paper destroy our marriage because I was too proud—too terrified—to ask you about it."

"And I was too arrogant, too caught up in building an empire, to notice that my own house was being undermined from the inside," Declan replied, pressing a soft kiss into my hair. "We both made mistakes, Clara. We let fear make decisions for us."

"Never again," I whispered.

"Never again," Declan agreed firmly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box, placing it quietly on the coffee table between us. He didn't open it immediately; he let it sit there while he looked down into my eyes with a tenderness that took my breath away.

"I know we're technically divorced," Declan said, his voice dropping into a soft, nervous tremor I had never heard from him before. "I know I have to earn back every single day of trust you lost. But standing in this room six days ago, holding our son for the first time, I realized that my life didn't end when you walked out—it was just paused until I found my way back to you."

He popped the box open, revealing a ring that wasn't our old wedding band, but a brilliant, custom-designed diamond and emerald ring that caught the firelight like green ice.

"Marry me again, Clara," he whispered. "Let us do it right this time. No secrets, no corporate shadows, just us and James."
