Chapter 2 - The Architect of Lies"Marcus," Declan whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue.

For the next hour, the snowstorm outside raged while Declan dismantled the puzzle of our divorce piece by piece. Marcus Vance, who had served as an outside corporate consultant and legal strategist for Rowan Enterprises, had enjoyed unrestricted access to Declan’s private office during the autumn before our separation. Marcus had a reputation in the city for being ruthless, ambitious, and utterly devoid of ethical boundaries—a man who engineered outcomes by manufacturing fear where none existed.
"He knew our marriage was strained because I was spending too many late nights at the towers," Declan said, pacing the small living room with long, agitated strides. He stopped near the window, staring out into the dark, falling snow. "He wanted a permanent foothold inside Rowan Enterprises. If he could fracture our marriage, drive you away, and isolate me, he could position himself as my indispensable right-hand man during the fallout."
"He succeeded," I said bitterly. "When I saw that folder, I didn't confront you. I was too cowardly, too terrified that the man I loved was planning how to steal a child we hadn't even conceived yet. I packed two bags while you were in Geneva, signed the preliminary separation agreement your office sent over through a courier, and ran as far away as my savings would take me."
Declan turned back to face me, his green eyes burning with a fierce, terrifying intensity. "And you went through the entire pregnancy completely alone. No doctor visits where someone held your hand. No nursery being built. No one to call in the middle of the night when you were scared."
"I had my OB-GYN, and I had my own strength," I replied, refusing to let him pity me. "And then I had James."

Declan took a slow, deliberate step toward the sofa, stopping a few feet away. He looked down at the tiny baby sleeping against my chest, his broad shoulders trembling slightly. "May I... just for a second? I promise I won't take him away. I just want to feel what you've been carrying for nine months."
The plea in his voice wasn't the demand of a billionaire accustomed to taking what he wanted. It was the humble request of a father begging for grace. Slowly, carefully, I shifted James forward. Declan slid his large, warm hands beneath the baby's blanket, supporting his head with a tenderness that shocked me. When James’s tiny weight settled against Declan’s chest, my ex-husband closed his eyes, and a single tear traced a hot path down his cheek.
