Chapter 3 - Unraveling the NetworkBy dawn, the snowstorm had blanketed Seattle in a thick, glittering white silence, but inside the Maple Street house, a different kind of storm was just beginning to brew.

Declan hadn't left. He had spent the remainder of Christmas Eve sitting quietly in the armchair across from the bassinet, watching James breathe while making silent mental calculations. When morning light filtered through the frosted windows, he pulled out his encrypted phone and dialed a direct, high-priority extension.

"Get me corporate security and forensic auditing," Declan said into the receiver, his voice cold, commanding, and absolute. "I want every digital footprint, email trail, and visitor log from my private office spanning October to December of last year. Look specifically for anything originating from Marcus Vance's terminal."

I walked into the kitchen, pouring hot water over chamomile leaves in a chipped ceramic mug. Declan stepped in behind me, his tall frame making the small kitchen feel even cozier.

"You don't have to fight him on my behalf, Declan," I said without turning around. "My life is here now. James is here."

"Your life is wherever my son is," Declan replied quietly, leaning his hip against the counter beside me. "And Marcus Vance is going to pay for every single day he stole from us. Do you have any idea what he cost me, Clara? He didn't just ruin our marriage; he robbed me of my son's first months. He robbed me of taking care of you while you were carrying him."

"We can't rewrite the last eight months," I whispered, turning to face him. His face was only inches from mine, and for the first time since our divorce, the invisible wall between us felt thin enough to shatter.

"No," Declan agreed, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His fingers were warm and steady. "We can't rewrite the past. But we write every single day from this moment forward. If you'll let me."

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed on the kitchen island. It wasn't a call; it was a news alert from a local financial blog. My breath caught in my throat as I read the headline: Prominent Developer Marcus Vance Faces Federal Investigation Over Structural Compliance and Corporate Espionage.

I looked up at Declan in astonishment. "Did you do this?"

Declan gave a slow, grim smile. "No, Clara. That’s just collateral damage. Marcus made the mistake of stepping into a war he thought he could control. Today, we finish it."
