Chapter 7 - The Masterpiece We BuiltSix months later, the violent thunderstorms that usually battered Chicago in early autumn had given way to a crisp, golden October afternoon.

The criminal indictments had been formally dismissed with prejudice by the federal judge, Gabriel Vance’s syndicate had been permanently absorbed into Marlowe Enterprises under legitimate corporate restructuring, and Evan had quietly relocated to Europe, funded by a trust established secretly by Vincent to ensure his son never had to live in poverty, even if he could never return home.
And me?
I stood on the wraparound balcony of Vincent’s penthouse suite on the forty-fifth floor, wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green silk dress that caught the sunlight. The skyline of Chicago stretched out before me—vast, powerful, and entirely at peace.
Footsteps echoed softly behind me on the hardwood floor.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest. A chin rested gently on my shoulder, and the familiar scent of cedar and dark coffee surrounded me like a shield.
"You're thinking too hard," Vincent murmured, his voice a low, soothing rumble against my ear.
I smiled, leaning back into his embrace and placing my hands over his. "I'm not thinking. I'm just enjoying the view."
"The view is alright," Vincent teased softly, turning me around in his arms so I was facing him. He looked younger now, the lines of chronic stress around his eyes softened by a genuine, quiet happiness that had been missing for years. "Though I can think of a dozen better things to look at."
"You're incorrigible, Mr. Marlowe," I laughed softly.
"Only for you, Claire," he whispered.
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. My breath hitched slightly. It wasn't his late wife's heirloom ring—that chapter of the past was closed forever. Instead, as he popped open the lid, a modern, flawless platinum band set with a deep green emerald caught the afternoon light.
"No public spectacles," Vincent promised, his dark eyes locked onto mine with fierce, unwavering devotion. "No grand hotel ballrooms. Just you, me, and a partnership built on honesty, mutual respect, and a stubborn refusal to ever let each other go."
I looked down at the ring, then up into the face of the man who had terrified me, challenged me, and ultimately loved me in a way I never knew existed.
"About time you asked," I whispered.
May you like
Vincent’s mouth curved into a slow, breathtaking smile. He slid the ring onto my finger, pulled me close, and kissed me with all the fierce, unhurried passion of a man who had finally found his true home.
The past was behind us. The enemies were silenced. And the empire we had built together was finally ours to share.
