Chapter 5 - The AftermathThe forty-fifth floor looked like a war zone.

Acrid gunsmoke hung thick in the air, mixing with the sharp scent of shattered safety glass and burned drywall. Two of Evan’s mercenaries were handcuffed and pinned to the marble floor by Marlowe security guards, while paramedics rushed in through the elevators to check for injuries.

I was sitting on a velvet sofa near the windows, my knees pulled up to my chest, staring blankly at a bullet hole punched through the wall three feet above where I had been standing.

Footsteps approached.

Vincent dropped to one knee in front of me. His face was smudged with soot, a small scratch bleeding sluggishly along his jawline, but his hands were steady as he reached out and gently took my face in his palms.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice trembling—the first time I had ever heard fear crack through his armor.

"No," I whispered, shaking my head. "I'm not hurt. Vincent... where is Evan?"

"He escaped down the service stairwell before Marcus could seal the perimeter," Vincent said, his jaw tightening into a hard, rigid line. "He’s gone underground."

"He tried to kill you," I said, the horrific reality of what had just happened finally crashing down over me. Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and fast. "If I hadn't thrown that pitcher... he would have killed you."

Vincent pulled me forward, burying my face against his broad, solid chest. He wrapped his arms around me so tightly I could hear the heavy, rapid thumping of his heart.

"You saved my life," Vincent murmured against my hair, his voice thick with emotion. "You risked your life for mine."

"I couldn't lose you," I choked out, gripping the fabric of his shirt. "Not after we finally found each other."

Marcus stepped up cautiously behind us, clearing his throat. "Boss. The perimeter is secured. Federal agents from the DOJ are on their way up—they want to debrief us on Gabriel Vance’s network collapse. But... there's something else you need to see."

Vincent slowly released me, standing up while keeping one hand protectively on my shoulder. He looked at Marcus. "What is it?"

Marcus handed him a burner smartphone wrapped in an evidence bag.

"We recovered this from the mercenary leader we pinned down," Marcus said grimly. "It’s a direct message thread between Evan and a high-ranking federal prosecutor named Richard Vance—Gabriel’s cousin."

Vincent’s dark eyes narrowed as he read the screen. "Evan didn't just go rogue. He cut a deal with the Justice Department."

"What kind of deal?" I asked, standing up beside Vincent.

"Immunity for Evan," Marcus said flatly. "In exchange for a signed, sworn affidavit from Evan detailing every single corporate infraction, tax loophole, and shell company Marlowe Enterprises has used over the last decade. He’s trading our entire empire to put Vincent in a federal penitentiary."

The silence that followed was heavier than the gunfire had been.

Evan wasn't just running away. He was building a federal case designed to tear down his father’s entire world brick by brick, using the exact internal knowledge I had spent three years organizing and auditing for the company.

My work. My ledgers. My files.

"He's using my audits," I whispered, horror washing over me. "He stole my quarterly compliance reports from my office safe last week to build the indictment."

Vincent turned to me, his expression softening instantly despite the catastrophic storm gathering around us. He reached out, taking my hands in his.

"Listen to me, Claire," Vincent said, his voice absolute and unyielding. "You didn't do anything wrong. You did your job with integrity. Whatever Evan tries to hand over to the DOJ, we will dismantle it piece by piece in court. I survived twenty years in this city before Evan was even born. I am not going down now."

"What do we do?" I asked, looking up into his unwavering eyes.

"We fight," Vincent said quietly. "Legally, financially, and completely. And we start by finding my son before he destroys himself entirely."
