Chapter 4 - The Breach"Get down!"

Vincent didn't hesitate. In a single fluid motion, he grabbed my arm, shoving me behind the heavy oak conference table just as the reinforced glass doors of the penthouse suite shattered inward with an ear-splitting crash.

A volley of submachine gun fire chewed through the drywall above our heads, raining plaster dust and wood splinters down onto our hair.

"Marcus! Status!" Vincent roared into his secure radio, pulling a customized Sig Sauer P226 from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed.

"The ground floor security team is pinned down! We're fighting our way up the service elevator, but we’re two minutes out, Boss!" Marcus yelled over the roar of gunfire. "Get out of the office!"

"There's no time," Vincent muttered, his jaw clenched tight.

He looked down at me behind the table, his dark eyes burning with fierce, protective urgency. "Claire, listen to me. There’s a panic room behind the back bookcase. Enter the code 0419. Get inside and lock it."

"I'm not leaving you here to face Evan alone!" I protested, grabbing the sleeve of his shirt.

"If they take this floor, the first thing Evan will do is look for you!" Vincent snapped, his voice dropping into a desperate, commanding register. "Go! That's an order!"

Before I could argue further, heavy footsteps thudded across the marble floor outside the conference room. Shouting echoed through the suite.

"Clear the perimeter! Check every room! If anyone gets in our way, shoot!"

It was Evan’s voice. It sounded distorted, frantic, and entirely unhinged—nothing like the polished, charming corporate lawyer he had pretended to be for the past three years.

Vincent shoved me gently toward the heavy mahogany bookcase on the far side of the room, then rolled smoothly across the floor, taking cover behind a structural concrete pillar with his pistol raised.

"Evan!" Vincent’s deep voice boomed across the open-plan office. "Turn around right now! This ends before someone gets killed!"

The gunfire stopped abruptly.

Heavy, uneven footsteps approached the conference room threshold. A figure appeared in the shattered doorway, silhouetted against the emergency exit lights.

Evan Marlowe stood there holding a tactical carbine, his tuxedo jacket gone, his white shirt stained with dirt and sweat, his eyes wide and bloodshot. Behind him stood four masked mercenaries wearing heavy body armor.

"It's a little late for a family meeting, Dad," Evan laughed—a high, manic sound that sent a chill straight down my spine.

I crouched behind the bookcase, my fingers trembling as I punched the security code 0-4-1-9 into the hidden keypad beside the wood paneling. A faint mechanical click echoed inside the wall, but the heavy door didn't slide open immediately; the biometric scanner was blinking red.

System override required.

My heart skipped a beat. The power grid to the executive floor had been partially severed during the breach, locking out the manual override.

Across the room, Vincent stepped out from behind the concrete pillar, keeping his pistol lowered at his side, his eyes fixed entirely on his son.

"Put the weapon down, Evan," Vincent said calmly. "You're out of your mind. You think working with mercenaries and attacking your own father’s headquarters is going to win you back your standing? You're committing treason against your own blood."

"My blood?" Evan screamed, raising the barrel of the carbine until it pointed squarely at Vincent’s chest. "You stole my life! You sat there watching us for three years, pretending to be the benevolent boss while you waited for the right moment to sink your claws into her!"

"She was never yours to own, Evan," Vincent replied, his voice terrifyingly steady. "People are not property."

"Shut up!" Evan sobbed, his finger tightening visibly on the trigger. "If I can't have her... if I can't have this empire... then neither of you will!"

I slammed my palm against the keypad again. Come on, open damn you!

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw one of the masked mercenaries behind Evan raise a secondary assault rifle, aiming directly at Vincent’s blind spot.

"Vincent! Look out!" I screamed, abandoning all cover.

I lunged forward, grabbing a heavy glass water pitcher off the side table and hurling it with all my might straight at the mercenary’s head. The pitcher shattered against the man's tactical helmet, throwing off his aim just as a deafening roar tore through the room.

Bang!

A bullet shredded the wood paneling right beside my ear.

Chaos erupted in a single second. Vincent fired twice, neutralizing the mercenary on the right, while the other guards returned fire, riddling the conference table with bullets.

Before Evan could swing his rifle toward me, a barrage of automatic gunfire echoed from the elevator hallway.

Marcus and six tactical operators in black Marlowe Security gear burst into the suite like a tidal wave, returning heavy fire and forcing Evan’s mercenaries back toward the glass windows.

"Boss! We've got you!" Marcus roared, laying down suppressive fire.

Evan, realizing his strike team was outgunned and surrounded, stumbled backward, his face twisted in pure, unadulterated rage. He grabbed a shattered section of the glass partition, vaulted over the balcony ledge into the interior atrium stairwell, and vanished into the smoke.
