Chapter 5 - The Execution in the CourtroomAt 3:30 PM, the grand marble hallway of the Cook County Family Courthouse was filled with reporters, private attorneys, and armed county sheriffs.

Sitting at the petitioner’s table inside Courtroom 402, wearing an expensive grey suit, flanked by four high-priced litigators, was sixty-two-year-old Arthur Vance. Beside him stood his son, Thomas Vance, who was out on temporary bail.
Arthur Vance smiled arrogantly as he looked at the media cameras, holding a stack of forged custody papers. "The court will recognize that a crime lord like Dominic Moretti has no legal standing to hold my grandchildren! I am their biological blood!"
BOOM!
The heavy mahogany double doors of Courtroom 402 were thrown open.
The entire courtroom went dead, breathlessly silent.
Walking down the central aisle, flanked by Marcus Reyes and twenty armed Moretti operators, was me.
I held eleven-year-old Lily’s hand in my broad palm, while Mrs. Gable carried six-month-old Leo directly behind us.
Lily walked with her spine straight, her posture royal, her blue eyes holding zero fear as she passed the media cameras.
Arthur Vance’s arrogant smile completely withered as I stopped at the defense table.
Judge Harold Vance—a sixty-five-year-old senior magistrate—struck his gavel three times against the wooden bench. "Order in the court! Mr. Moretti, you are appearing in a private family custody hearing—"
"Judge Vance," Marcus Reyes interrupted smoothly, stepping forward and dropping a heavy leather briefcase flat onto the judge's bench.
"What is this, Mr. Reyes?" the judge frowned.
"This is a certified forensic audit executed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation forty minutes ago," Marcus revealed, his voice echoing cleanly through the silent courtroom. "Disclosing two million dollars in offshore bribe payments made by Arthur Vance into your private accounts in the Bahamas to secure this emergency custody order."
The judge’s face drained completely of all color. He dropped his wooden gavel, his hands shaking frantically as he stared at the banking ledgers displayed on the monitor.
"Furthermore," Marcus continued, "we have submitted certified medical records disclosing the severe physical abuse inflicted upon Lily and Leo Vance by Thomas Vance under Arthur Vance's direct instructions."
Two uniformed Federal Marshals stepped through the rear doors, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around Arthur Vance and Thomas Vance’s wrists with an iron snap.
CLICK. CLICK.
"Arthur Vance and Thomas Vance," Federal Agent Vance announced cleanly. "You are under arrest for Child Endangerment, Extortion, Fraud, and Judicial Bribery."
Arthur Vance wept pathetically, thrashing against his restraints as he and his son were dragged out through the double doors in chains before two dozen news cameras.
Judge Harold Vance sat trembling behind his bench, his career and freedom completely ruined in less than ten minutes.
I walked up to the bench, setting a final document flat on the wood.
"Sign the formal adoption decree, Harold," I ordered flatly, my baritone dropping into a cold, lethal register. "Before the Marshals come back for you."

With trembling hands, the judge grabbed his silver pen, signing his name across the parchment:
FULL LEGAL ADOPTION GRANTED TO DOMINIC MORETTI.
