Chapter 3 - The Fortress on Lake Shore DriveBy 11:30 PM, the storm outside had turned into a heavy, white blizzard that blanketed the streets of Chicago.

My midnight-black armored Maybach glided through the iron security gates of the Moretti Estate perched on Lake Shore Drive.
The estate was a stone fortress surrounded by high brick walls, infrared security cameras, and broad-shouldered men in dark suits carrying concealed weapons.
When the car stopped outside the grand mahogany front doors, I stepped out first, extending my broad hand to help Lily down.
In her arms, six-month-old Leo was fast asleep, his tummy full of warm chicken soup and milk, wrapped safely inside a soft wool blanket provided by Rosa.
Lily stopped on the marble steps, her wide blue eyes staring up at the soaring stone arches, the crystal chandeliers glowing through the front windows, and the two rows of polite estate staff waiting inside the foyer.
"Mr. Moretti..." Lily whispered, her small voice trembling as she looked at her scuffed, wet shoes against the pristine marble. "Is this a palace?"
I dropped onto one knee flat on the cold stone steps before her, bringing my broad frame down level with her small eyes.
"This is a home, Lily," I rasped softly, my deep baritone carrying an unexpected, profound warmth. "And as long as you and your brother are under this roof... no one in this world will ever make you hungry or afraid again."
Tears flooded Lily’s blue eyes—real, weightless tears that washed away three months of cold terror. She stepped forward, throwing her small right arm around my neck, burying her face into the lapel of my heavy wool coat.
I wrapped my broad arm around her shoulders, holding her and her sleeping brother close against my beating heart, feeling a deep, weightless peace settle into every corner of my soul.

My chief housekeeper, Mrs. Gable—a warm, silver-haired woman—stepped forward with a team of two private pediatric nurses.
"Welcome home, little ones," Mrs. Gable smiled gently, her eyes shining with tears. "The nursery suite on the second floor is warmed and waiting."
