Chapter 4 - The War for the BloodlineBy 9:00 AM the following morning, the news that Dominic Moretti had taken two orphaned children into his private estate detonated across Chicago's legal, corporate, and underground sectors.

At 2:00 PM, a formal legal summons arrived at the Moretti Estate on gold-embossed cardstock from the Cook County Family Division:
EMERGENCY CUSTODY HEARING
PETITIONER: ARTHUR VANCE (MATERNAL GRANDFATHER)
ATTENDANCE MANDATORY FOR DON DOMINIC MORETTI
Sitting in my mahogany study, I reviewed the legal documents alongside my chief counsel, Marcus Reyes.
"Arthur Vance is Thomas Vance’s father, Don Dominic," Marcus explained, setting three encrypted files onto my desk. "He’s a seventy-year-old corrupt real estate developer who operates secondary money-laundering schemes for the Moretti syndicate’s rivals in Gary. He doesn't want the children because he loves them. He wants them because Lily and Leo’s late mother was the sole beneficiary of a twelve-million-dollar land trust in South Chicago."
My jaw set tight, my storm-dark eyes turning ice-cold. "So Thomas locked them in a closet to force them to sign over the land trust."
"Exactly," Marcus confirmed. "And now Arthur Vance is using corrupt family court judges to demand immediate surrender of the orphans."
Inside the grand dressing suite on the second floor, eleven-year-old Lily stood before a full-length mirror wearing an exquisite navy blue wool dress provided by my private estate tailor. Her dark hair was styled in soft, glossy waves, and six-month-old Leo wore a matching velvet romper, his rosy cheeks full of health and laughter.
I stepped into the doorway wearing an immaculate black suit.
Lily turned, her blue eyes shining as she looked at me. "Do I look okay, Mr. Moretti? Are they going to take us away?"
May you like
I walked across the room, dropping onto one knee before her, gently taking her small hands into my broad, calloused palms.
"No one is taking you anywhere, Lily," I promised, my voice carrying an absolute, unyielding covenant. "Today, we show Chicago who your family is."
