Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at St. Jude’sBy late afternoon, the winter sleet had turned into a steady, freezing rain that plastered the city streets in a layer of black ice.

Inside the private VIP maternity suite of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, the room was warm, quiet, and smelled faintly of lavender and baby lotion. I was sitting propped up against a mountain of pillows, cradling little Clara in my arms as she slept peacefully against my chest, her tiny chest rising and falling in perfect rhythm.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
“Come in,” I said quietly.
The door clicked open, and Dr. Robert Vance stepped into the room.
Gone was the arrogant, unassailable patriarch who used to look down on me at family dinners as a clever working-class girl lucky to have married into dynastic wealth. His shoulders were slumped, his face was pale, and he looked every one of his seventy-two years. In his hand, he held a leather portfolio.
“Mabel,” he said, his voice raspy and defeated.
I didn't invite him to sit down. I didn't smile. I simply looked up from Clara’s face and met his eyes with a cold, level stare.
“Chairman Vance,” I replied evenly. “You’re late. The board meeting ended three hours ago.”
Robert closed the door behind him and walked slowly toward the bed. He stopped a few feet away, looking down at Clara sleeping against my chest. For a fleeting second, a look of profound sorrow flickered across his old eyes.
“She has your eyes, Mabel,” he murmured softly.
“She has my name, too,” I replied without blinking. “And she will never have to beg for a place at a table she built with her own mother’s blood and sweat.”
Robert let out a long, shuddering sigh. He opened the leather portfolio, pulled out a thick stack of papers bearing official corporate red seals, and laid them gently on the edge of the mattress.
“I signed it,” Robert said quietly. “The board accepted all three conditions. Flynn has been stripped of his title, his executive access, and his equity stake. The $4.2 million has been transferred into Clara’s trust. And... my resignation letter has been submitted to the SEC. Effective Friday, I am stepping down as Chairman.”
I looked down at the papers, scanning the signatures to verify that every legal safeguard was securely locked in place. Everything was there. The Vance empire was officially within my grasp—not as a gift from a husband who thought I was disposable, but as absolute, unassailable conquest.
“Where is Flynn?” I asked, my voice devoid of any lingering warmth or pity.
Robert winced, looking away toward the rain-streaked window. “He’s... he’s completely unraveled, Mabel. His apartments are locked, his bank accounts are seized, his credit is destroyed, and Selena packed her bags and left him the moment she realized he couldn't pay for her hotel room. He’s sitting in his car in the hospital parking garage right now, weeping like a child, begging me to save him.”
“Save him?” I let out a cold, humorless laugh. “From what, Robert? From the consequences of his own arrogance? When he walked into my delivery room yesterday with his mistress, he told me I was useless. He told me my child was a nobody. He made his bed. Now he gets to lie in it—on a lonesome mattress in a cheap Queens storage locker.”
Robert nodded slowly, accepting the brutal justice of my words. He turned back toward the door, his hand resting on the brass handle.
“You destroyed us, Mabel,” he said softly, a mix of awe and terror in his voice.
May you like
“No, Robert,” I corrected him, looking down at Clara as she let out a tiny, contented sigh in her sleep. “I didn't destroy you. I simply stopped holding up the ceiling for men who thought they owned the sky.”
The door clicked shut, leaving me alone with my daughter in the warm, safe quiet of the room.
