Chapter 2 - The Card DeclinedThe morning sun rose over Manhattan, cold and unyielding, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete canyons of Wall Street.

By 8:45 AM, Dr. Flynn Vance was sitting in the ultra-exclusive leather booth of Le Cirque, casually sipping a double espresso across from Selena. She was draped in a newly purchased Chanel cashmere wrap, her hand resting gracefully on her still-flat belly as she pointed excitedly at the breakfast menu.
“Oh, Flynn, look, they have the truffle scrambled eggs,” Selena cooed, batting her eyelashes. “After last night... well, I just feel like we deserve to celebrate. You were so brave standing up to Mabel like that. The Vance family needs a real heir, not some... well, whatever little girl she popped out.”
Flynn smiled, a self-satisfied smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. He felt untouchable. He was the golden boy of the Vance empire, a brilliant executive poised to take over full chairmanship when his aging father finally stepped down.
“Mabel was always too rigid, Selena,” Flynn said, cutting into a piece of brioche with casual arrogance. “She treated marriage like a board meeting. You understand what a man in my position actually needs—loyalty, softness, and a son to carry the family crest.”
He reached into his tailored suit jacket, pulled out his platinum centurion card, and tossed it onto the silver tray when the waiter dropped the check.
“Put it on the black card,” Flynn commanded smoothly without even looking at the total.
The waiter, a seasoned professional named Julian who had served the city's elite for decades, took the card and walked swiftly toward the terminal behind the mahogany bar.
Five minutes passed. Then ten.
Selena frowned, setting down her fork. “Flynn, why is Julian taking so long? Is there a problem?”
“Probably just a chip error,” Flynn dismissed with a wave of his hand, checking his diamond-encrusted Rolex. “The bank systems update on Wednesdays.”
Julian finally walked back toward the table, but his posture was rigid, his face carefully neutral in the way only high-end service staff could manage when dealing with catastrophic embarrassment. He placed the leather folder flat on the table, along with the platinum card.
“I’m sorry, Dr. Vance,” Julian said softly, keeping his voice beneath conversational levels so neighboring diners wouldn't hear. “The transaction was declined by the issuer. Code 05: Do Not Honor.”
Flynn’s smile vanished. A sharp crease formed between his dark eyebrows.
“Declined?” Flynn repeated, letting out a dry, incredulous chuckle. “That’s impossible. Run it again. It’s a Centurion card with an unlimited spending ceiling.”
“I ran it twice, sir,” Julian replied politely, though his eyes held a flicker of cold distance. “The POS terminal returned a restricted-hold status linked to a federal asset freeze order. Perhaps you should contact your private banking concierge.”
Selena’s jaw dropped. “Declined? Flynn, what is he talking about? Did you forget to pay your bill?”
Flynn’s face flushed a deep, mottled red. Frustration and rising panic warred in his chest as he grabbed his phone from the table, unlocked it with shaking fingers, and tapped open his private banking app.
The screen flashed a stark, terrifying red banner:
ACCOUNT STATUS: FROZEN BY COURT ORDER. PENDING ASSET VERIFICATION.
He tapped over to his secondary corporate liquidity account. Frozen. He checked his personal investment portfolio. Zeroed out.
“What the hell is this?” Flynn muttered under his breath, his thumb flying across the screen as he dialed his private wealth manager at Goldman Sachs.
“Pick up, damn it, pick up,” he hissed.
After four agonizing rings, a strained, professional voice answered. “Vance Private Wealth, this is David.”
“David, what is happening to my accounts?!” Flynn barked, standing up so abruptly his chair scraped loudly against the parquet floor, turning the heads of everyone in the restaurant. “Why are my personal and investment accounts frozen? I have a multi-million-dollar liquidity sweep scheduled for this morning!”
David’s voice on the other end was tight with suppressed panic. “Dr. Vance... we were just about to contact you. At 6:00 AM today, our legal compliance department received an emergency asset-freeze order filed by Rachel Bennett & Associates, backed by an eighty-percent majority shareholder injunction from the Mabel-Flynn Holding LLC.”
Flynn stopped breathing. The restaurant noise around him seemed to mute into a low, buzzing hum.
“Mabel’s... Mabel’s holding company?” Flynn choked out, his fingers digging into the edge of the mahogany table. “That’s impossible. She’s in the hospital recovering from childbirth! She doesn't have the legal authority to freeze primary corporate assets without board approval!”
“Sir,” David replied grimly, “according to the original trust charter drafted four years ago, the primary managing partner holds absolute unilateral override authority in the event of material breach of marital fidelity or fraudulent dissipation of trust capital. Your accounts have been locked pending a full forensic audit.”
The phone slipped from Flynn’s fingers, clattering loudly against the table before sliding onto the floor.
Selena stared at him, her eyes wide with mounting terror. “Flynn... Flynn, what’s going on? Why are you looking like that?”
May you like
Flynn didn't answer. He stood frozen in the center of the restaurant, the realization crashing over him like a tidal wave.
Mabel hadn't just been a tired, crying pregnant woman in that delivery room. She had been a loaded gun—and she had just pulled the trigger.
