Chapter 7 - The Final Verdict

Deep inside the maximum-security federal penitentiary two hours outside of Chicago, the television screen in the communal recreation room flickered under harsh fluorescent lights.

Daniel Carter sat at a scarred metal table, wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hair thinning and graying at the temples, his face hollowed out by months of stress, institutional food, and crushing regret.

The evening news broadcast was playing on the muted screen, with closed captions running across the bottom.

“...and in business news tonight, Carter Global Chairwoman Emily Carter delivered a landmark keynote address at the Chicago Business Leaders Gala earlier this evening, celebrating record-breaking fiscal growth and announcing a new global philanthropic foundation...”

Beneath the headline, a crystal-clear photograph flashed across the screen.

It showed Emily standing on stage in her stunning midnight-blue gown, holding a heavy crystal award, her smile radiant, confident, and utterly breathtaking. She looked like a queen ruling over an empire that could never be shaken.

Daniel stared at the image, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the metal table.

Beside him, another inmate glanced at the screen, then looked over at Daniel with a smirk. “Hey, Carter… isn't that your ex-wife? The one you tried to cheat on and rob blind?”

Daniel didn't answer. He couldn't.

A heavy guard slammed a baton against the metal bars of the cell block, shouting, “Rec time is over! Back to your blocks, let’s move!”

As Daniel stood up and shuffled slowly back toward his cold, narrow cell, the prison doors slammed shut behind him with a final, echoing thud.

Far away, under the glittering lights of the Chicago skyline, Emily Carter stood on the balcony of her penthouse office, looking out at the vast, beautiful city she had reclaimed. The past was nothing more than ashes in the wind, and her empire—unbreakable, fierce, and entirely her own—was just beginning to soar.
