Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Carter

The mahogany boardroom of Vance & Associates Legal Partners smelled of old paper, expensive leather, and impending disaster.
Emily sat at the head of the conference table, wearing a sharp black blazer, her altered hair styled into a bold, asymmetrical crop that somehow made her look ten times more formidable than she had before. Spread out across the polished wood were thousands of pages of financial audits, offshore transfer records, and corporate ownership filings that had taken months to compile.
Four minutes had passed since her phone call.
The heavy glass doors of the office swung open. Daniel strode into the room, his face flushed with irritation, closely followed by Vanessa, who looked as though she had just stepped out of a high-fashion magazine shoot, wearing a smirk of supreme confidence.
“This is absurd, Emily,” Daniel snapped, slamming his briefcase down onto the table. “Do you have any idea how many board members I had to blow off to drive down here because of your little temper tantrum? And you dragged Vanessa along? Apologize to her and let’s go home.”
Vanessa crossed her arms, looking around the opulent legal office as if she already owned the building. “Honestly, Emily, throwing a public scene at the office just because you can't accept that Daniel has moved on is pathetic. Cutting your own hair for sympathy won't change the fact that he doesn't want you anymore.”
Emily didn’t blink. She didn't raise her voice. She simply looked at Marcus Vance, her lead attorney, who was holding a thick manila folder.
“Mr. Carter,” Marcus said smoothly, his voice cutting through Vanessa’s condescending laughter like a scalpel. “Before you start demanding apologies, I suggest you look at Document 401-B.”
Daniel frowned, leaning over the table to flip open the folder. “What is this? Some kind of settlement proposal? Look, if you want a larger monthly alimony payout, just name your number, but—aid me here, this is ridiculous—”
“It’s not a settlement proposal,” Emily interrupted softly, resting her elbows on the table and lacing her fingers together. “It’s an inventory of everything you no longer own.”
Daniel stopped talking. His eyes scanned the first page of the document, then raced down to the second, third, and fourth pages. The color rapidly drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, ash-grey hue.
“No…” Daniel whispered, his hands trembling as he gripped the edges of the paper. “No, this is a mistake. Carter Logistics is publicly traded! The primary holding company is under my name! How is every subsidiary account showing a zero balance? How are my personal checking accounts frozen?”
“Because,” Emily said, her voice dropping into a chilling register that made the hairs on the back of Daniel’s neck stand up, “when you married me ten years ago, you signed a master pre-nuptial agreement drafted by my grandfather—the founder of Carter Shipping before you ever bought your first delivery van. Every single share, every building, every vehicle, and every offshore account was collateralized under my family’s trust. You were never the CEO, Daniel. You were just the employee managing my assets.”
Vanessa’s smirk vanished instantly. She stepped forward, peering over Daniel’s shoulder at the financial statements. “Daniel, what is she talking about? Tell me she’s lying! Tell me our expansion budget for next quarter isn't tied up in this!”
Daniel didn't answer her. He looked up at Emily with eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated terror. For the first time in ten years, he realized he wasn't looking at the quiet, obedient wife who cooked his dinners and managed his social calendar. He was looking at the sole heir to the entire corporate empire that had made him who he was.

“Emily… please,” Daniel choked out, his voice cracking as he stumbled around the table toward her. “You can’t do this. We’ve built a life together! Tell me this is just a warning—tell me we can talk about this at home!”
“There is no home, Daniel,” Emily said, standing up slowly from her chair. She looked down at Vanessa, who was now trembling as the reality of her unemployment and financial ruin began to set in. “And as for you, Vanessa… you wanted to play executive so badly. Let’s see how well you perform when the company you tried to steal from goes into immediate receivership.”
