Chapter 4 - The Aftermath

The federal indictment hit the evening news cycles with the force of a tidal wave.
“FORMER CEO OF CARTER LOGISTICS AND EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE COUNTS OF FRAUD AND EMBEZZLEMENT.”
Footage of federal agents escorting Daniel in handcuffs out of the corporate headquarters played on repeat across every major news channel. His expensive Italian suit was rumpled, his head bowed down toward the pavement to avoid the flashing cameras of reporters shouting questions about his downfall. Vanessa was arrested thirty minutes later at her luxury downtown apartment, her designer handbags and jewelry seized by federal marshals as proceeds of corporate crime.
Inside the penthouse apartment she had once shared with Daniel, Emily stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the city lights twinkle across the skyline.
The apartment was quiet. The movers had already cleared out Daniel’s personal belongings, leaving behind only the stark, echoing emptiness of a chapter of her life that was now firmly closed.
For months, she had lived in the shadow of a man who treated her like an accessory, doubting her own instincts, wondering if her suspicions of his infidelity were just paranoia. But looking back, she realized the betrayal was the best thing that could have ever happened to her. It had stripped away the illusions, forcing her to step out of the background and claim the power that had rightfully belonged to her all along.
The front door chimed softly.
Emily turned around as Marcus Vance stepped out of the private elevator, carrying a leather briefcase and a bottle of vintage champagne.
“I take it the asset transfer protocols are fully completed?” Emily asked, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips.
“Every single subsidiary is locked down, audited, and reorganized under the new Carter Global Holding umbrella,” Marcus reported, setting the briefcase on the kitchen island and popping the cork on the champagne with a satisfying pop. He poured two crystal flutes and handed one to Emily. “The board voted unanimously this afternoon to appoint you as the active Chairwoman and CEO.”
Emily took the flute, clinking it lightly against Marcus’s glass. “How are the stock markets reacting?”
“Surging,” Marcus smiled. “Investors are thrilled to see competent leadership back at the helm. Your grandfather would have been proud, Emily. You didn't just protect the empire; you saved it from parasites.”

“It’s only the beginning, Marcus,” Emily said, looking out toward the horizon where the glittering towers of the financial district pierced the night sky. “Carter Global is going to expand into international logistics, green shipping corridors, and philanthropic foundations. We’re going to build something that actually matters.”
Marcus raised his glass in a silent toast. “To the new era, Madam CEO.”
