Chapter 6 - The Mediation TableSix months later, the conference room at Vance & Sterling was filled with the quiet, tense hum of a settlement negotiation.

Grant looked a decade older. His posture was permanently slumped, his tailored suits hung loosely on a frame thinned by months of stress and sleepless nights, and the arrogant smirk that had once defined him was completely gone. Sitting across the long mahogany table, his defense attorney looked exhausted, frantically whispering advice to a client who no longer had any leverage left to bargain with.

Emily sat opposite them, impeccably dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer, looking radiant, confident, and utterly untouchable. Ivy, now nearly a year old, was being cared for in a private playroom downstairs by a nanny funded by the temporary support orders Grant had been forced to pay.

Sarah Sterling slid the final, comprehensive settlement agreement across the polished wood toward Grant’s counsel.

"Read it carefully, counselor," Sarah stated, her voice sharp as glass. "Every single term is non-negotiable. If Mr. Harrison attempts to contest any clause regarding the division of assets, the child support structure, or the permanent restraining order, we proceed directly to a public trial where his corporate embezzlement findings will be entered into the permanent criminal record."

Grant’s attorney skimmed the pages, his face turning pale. He looked across the table at Grant. "Sign it, Grant. It's the best outcome you're going to get."

Trembling, Grant picked up a heavy pen. He looked up, his red, bloodshot eyes locking onto Emily’s calm, steady gaze.

"Emily... please," he whispered, his voice cracking with desperation. "We had a life together. Can't we... can't we talk about this like adults?"

Emily didn't raise her voice. She didn't gloat. She simply looked at him with the quiet pity one might afford a stranger who had tripped over his own shoelaces.

"We are talking like adults, Grant," Emily replied smoothly. "You wanted a quiet house without any mess. Consider your wish granted."

With shaking hands, Grant pressed the pen to the paper and signed away his remaining leverage, sealing the end of his corporate empire and his marriage in one final stroke.
