Chapter 4 - The SubpoenaThree weeks passed in a strange, tense domestic vacuum. Grant continued his routine, occasionally trying to smooth things over with awkward gestures of forced affection, still entirely oblivious to the ticking clock beneath his feet. Emily played her part to perfection, remaining pleasant, focused entirely on Ivy, and quietly moving her personal belongings, family heirlooms, and important documents out of the house under the guise of "organizing storage."

Then came Tuesday morning.

Grant was sitting at the kitchen island, scrolling through his phone while waiting for his corporate car service to pick him up for a high-stakes executive meeting. The doorbell rang with a sharp, authoritative echo.

Thinking it was the courier service, Grant pulled the heavy front door open with a practiced smile.

Instead of a driver, two stern-looking men in tailored suits stood on the porch, flanked by a local county sheriff’s deputy.

"Grant Harrison?" the lead process server asked crisply, extending a thick manila envelope bearing the formal seal of the state court.

Grant’s smile vanished. "Yes? What is this?"

"You've been served," the man stated, thrusting the papers into Grant’s chest. "You are hereby served with a petition for legal separation, a temporary restraining order freezing all joint financial accounts, corporate disbursement holds, and an emergency asset preservation injunction."

Grant staggered backward, clutching the heavy stack of legal documents as if they were burning his skin. "This... this has to be a mistake. Claire—Emily! Emily, get out here right now! What is the meaning of this?!"

Emily walked slowly down the stairs, carrying a smiling, freshly fed Ivy in her arms. She stopped at the landing, looking down at her husband with an expression of absolute, chilling indifference.

"There's no mistake, Grant," Emily said quietly, her voice carrying effortlessly across the foyer. "You told me to take the mess somewhere else. I just decided to take myself, our daughter, and your financial security along with it."
