Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Art RoomFor three months, my world underwent a radiant, sunlit transformation.

The cold, lonely days at St. Jude's Children's Home were completely erased, replaced by an abundance of love, security, and absolute peace.

Dominic was unlike any father I could have imagined.

The feared Don who ruled New York's primary shipping networks became a fiercely protective, doting father who spent his mornings eating breakfast with me in the conservatory, his afternoons sitting on the rug helping me paint watercolor landscapes, and his evenings reading storybooks to me until I fell asleep.

Under the care of top private pediatric orthopedic specialists hired by Dominic, my physical therapy began. While my legs lacked nerve sensation due to a childhood spinal injury, the specialists designed custom braces and hydrotherapy regimens that allowed my upper body to grow strong, agile, and healthy.

I painted every single day.

My ground-floor suite was filled with dozens of my watercolor canvases—paintings of the sunlit gardens, the golden retriever puppy Dominic had bought for my seventh birthday, and portraits of Dominic holding my hand.

Until the afternoon I painted the portrait from my memory.

It was a rainy Tuesday in late November. Dominic was in Manhattan attending a corporate meeting, and I sat in the glass conservatory with my easel, using fine oils to paint a scene from my earliest childhood memory before I was dropped off at the orphanage at age two.

The painting depicted an elegant, silver-haired woman wearing a distinctive gold pendant shaped like a double-headed falcon, standing beside a historic oceanfront estate in Boston.

When Dominic returned home at five o'clock, he walked into the conservatory wearing his dark suit, carrying a box of warm pastries.

He stopped dead in his tracks three feet from my easel.

His storm-gray eyes locked onto the gold double-headed falcon pendant in my painting.

The pastries slipped from his fingers, hitting the marble floor with a quiet thud.

Dominic’s face went from its usual warm posture to a paper-white, frozen shock.

"Lily..." Dominic whispered rasply, his voice trembling with a dark, disbelieving panic. "Where... where did you see that gold pendant?"
