Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost BerthsBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor penthouse suite at The Vasquez Tower overlooking the Hudson River was transformed into a high-security tactical command post.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators guarded every corridor. Inside, I sat in a high-backed leather chair, wearing a dark navy wool coat, holding a mug of warm herbal tea, while private obstetric specialists verified that my pregnancy was healthy, hydrated, and strong.
Sitting around the long mahogany conference table were Miguel, Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, and two federal forensic accounting experts.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding high-definition digital ledgers flat onto the table toward Miguel and me:
THE FRAUDULENT FORECLOSURE: Forensic banking evidence proving Richard Bennett and Victor Moretti forged Arthur Bennett’s 2022 signature to transfer $120 million in commercial shipping equity into offshore shell companies in Panama.
THE UNCLE’S TREASON: Intercepted wiretaps catching Richard Bennett orchestrating the deliberate sabotage of Bennett Logistics cargo ships to force bankruptcy.
THE SOVEREIGN MERGER: Certified probate documents confirming that my baby and I legally hold fifty-one percent controlling common equity over the combined Vasquez-Bennett Maritime Corporation.
My hands clenched into tight fists flat against the mahogany table. The exhaustion and uncertainty of the past year melted away, replaced by a clean, weightless, diamond-hard fury.
"My uncle..." I rasped out, looking at Bridget. "Richard ruined my life. He let me work three jobs to pay off fake debts while he lived in a penthouse on Park Avenue."
"He didn't just ruin your life, Cat," Bridget revealed, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional satisfaction. "He paid off federal auditors to suppress your father's exoneration records."
Miguel walked behind my chair, placing his broad hands firmly over my shoulders, his warmth anchoring me completely.
"Where is Richard tonight, Marcus?" Miguel asked his security chief.
"He's at the St. Regis Ballroom, boss," Marcus Vance reported. "Victor Moretti and Richard are hosting an executive victory dinner with thirty high-society investors, preparing to announce the merger of Bennett Logistics into Moretti Global."
Miguel leaned down, his lips brushing against my crown, his baritone dipping into a quiet, lethal vow.
"Are you ready to meet your uncle, Cat?" Miguel asked gently.

I stood up from the leather chair, looking at my husband with an unshakeable, radiant peace and sovereign strength.
"I'm ready, Miguel," I answered. "Let's go tear his world down."
