Chapter 1 - The Hidden ClauseThe heavy cream paper felt like velvet between my shaking fingertips, but the crisp black ink printed across the second page burned like fire under the bedroom lights.

Miguel Vasquez stood six feet away, his broad six-foot-three frame anchored against the mahogany doorframe, his dark hair slightly rumpled, his charcoal suit jacket unbuttoned. The lethal, untouchable mafia boss who commanded half of New York’s shipping ports looked entirely vulnerable, his storm-gray eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my heart hammer against my ribs.
I stared down at the secret codicil bearing the official crest of Bennett Global Logistics—my late father’s company that had declared bankruptcy four years ago.
CONFIDENTIAL PROTOCOL 8-B:
The undersigned, Miguel Alexander Vasquez, guarantees the total debt buyout of Bennett Global Logistics ($120,000,000) and protects Catherine "Cat" Bennett from all outstanding liability claims. In exchange, Catherine Bennett shall hold sole fifty-one percent common equity control of the merged Vasquez-Bennett Maritime Corporation upon completion of one year of legal marriage.
My throat choked up. The paper trembled violently in my hand.
"You... you bought my father's company?" I whispered, my voice breaking into a dry, jagged rasp. "My father didn't die bankrupt... he was framed. And you knew?"
Miguel took two deliberate steps into the room, stopping right beside my half-packed suitcase. He reached down, his large, calloused hand gently closing over mine, guiding the paper down onto the mattress.
"Your father didn't commit wire fraud, Cat," Miguel spoke softly, his gravelly baritone dipping into a low register that sent shivers through my spine. "He was set up by my former business partner, Victor Moretti, and your own uncle, Richard Bennett. They wanted to strip your family of the North Atlantic shipping berths. I couldn't protect your father before he passed away... but I swore on my life I would protect you."
I stared at him, tears welling in my eyes. "Why didn't you tell me a year ago? Why let me believe I was just a convenience for your business alliance?!"
"Because Victor Moretti’s hit squads were watching every move I made," Miguel explained, his eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying fire. "If Richard and Victor knew you were the true controlling heir of Bennett Logistics, they would have put a bullet in your head before you ever reached the altar. The contract... the separate bedrooms... the cold distance... it was the only way to keep you safe until the one-year mark."
He reached out, his thumb gently catching a stray tear spilling over my cheek.
"I didn't choose you to fulfill an alliance, Cat," Miguel confessed, his voice dropping into a rough, passionate whisper. "I created the alliance so I would have an excuse to keep you beside me. I've been in love with you since the day I saw you defending your father's memory at that deposition four years ago."
My breath hitched.
Before I could answer, the secure radio clipped to Miguel’s inner jacket pocket crackled to life with frantic static.
"Boss! Boss, come in!"
It was Marcus Vance, Miguel's chief of security.
"Speak, Marcus," Miguel ordered, pulling the radio to his mouth, his entire demeanor shifting back into the ruthless Don in an instant.
"We have a breach at the West Side shipping terminal! Richard Bennett and Victor Moretti just filed an emergency injunction with the state court. They're claiming Catherine’s marriage contract is fraudulent and are moving to seize the North Atlantic berths tonight before the one-year mark expires on Monday!"

Miguel’s jaw clenched into granite. He looked back at me, his gray eyes burning with an absolute, sovereign resolve.
"Pack your bags, Cat," Miguel commanded softly, a dangerous smile touching his lips. "We’re going to the docks. And tonight, my wife takes back her father's empire."
