Chapter 6 - The Festival of the White RoseIn late September 2026, ten months after that fateful afternoon in the wicker chair, the central glass pavilion of the Rose Conservatory was packed to absolute capacity for the inaugural Elias & Ruby Varela Heritage & Healing Gala.

Over five hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, federal prosecutors, and high-society matriarchs gathered beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers and hanging white rose garlands.
Standing at the main presentation podium, wearing a dark bespoke charcoal tuxedo, my broad six-foot-three frame squared, my handsome face glowing with deep, quiet pride, was me.
Beside me stood Donna Mara Brooks-Varela, looking breathtaking in a floor-length dark emerald silk evening gown, alongside nine-year-old Ruby, who wore a custom white dress with a blue velvet ribbon, holding her cactus "The Chancellor" proudly in its small brass pot.
Around Mara’s neck hung Elias’s restored gold signet pendant.
I adjusted the microphone, my deep, resonant baritone echoing cleanly through the high-fidelity speakers:
"Ten months ago, I was a broken, sleepless man hiding from the sirens in my head," I announced to the silent room, my gray eyes shining with genuine, unshakeable emotion as I looked down at Mara and Ruby. "And on a rainy afternoon, an eight-year-old girl in an oversized blue cardigan scolded a white rose, told my guards to let me rest, and brought my entire world back to the light."
I held my champagne glass high under the glittering lights.

"To my Chairwoman, my savior, and my brave little guardian of the roses: Mara and Ruby Brooks-Varela!"
"To Mara and Ruby!" the entire room erupted into a warm, unanimous standing ovation, five hundred crystal glasses clinking together under the open sky.
